NARUTO Live-Action Movie Update Reveals Filming Will Begin January 2027
After years of sitting in development, the live-action Naruto movie is finally picking up some serious momentum. Fans have been waiting to see when this ambitious adaptation would actually move into production, and it looks like that wait is almost over.
A newly revealed casting update has confirmed that cameras are set to start rolling much sooner than many expected. That means Destin Daniel Cretton is getting ready to bring Masashi Kishimoto's beloved ninja world to life, and the search for the next Team 7 is officially underway.
Cretton has had a packed schedule over the last few years with projects like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Wonder Man, which pushed the Naruto movie further down the priority list. But now that things are finally moving forward, Lionsgate's live-action adaptation is entering its next major phase.
A global casting search has officially launched, and the details offer the clearest indication yet of the production timeline.
According to casting information released through companies including Carmen Cuba Casting, actors selected for the film will need to be available from January through August 2027, confirming that principal photography is expected to begin in January.
One interesting detail from the casting search is that previous acting experience isn't required. Instead, the production is looking for newcomers between 16 and 20 years old, primarily Asian or mixed-race Asian actors who can convincingly play 16-year-old characters on screen.
Martial arts or movement experience is considered a bonus, which certainly makes sense for a story packed with high-energy ninja action.
The age range has sparked some discussion because Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura are noticeably younger when the original manga and anime begin. At first glance, it could make fans wonder if the movie plans to skip ahead to the Naruto: Shippuden era.
That doesn't seem like the most likely scenario, though. It's much more reasonable to assume Cretton wants slightly older actors to help ground the film in a live-action setting while still adapting the beginning of Kishimoto's story.
Aging the characters up just a little could make the transition from anime to live action feel more natural while still delivering the emotional rivalries, friendships, and intense ninja battles that made Naruto such a worldwide phenomenon.
Right now, the open casting search appears to focus exclusively on Team 7, meaning Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura. The rest of the cast will likely be filled through more traditional casting methods, so it shouldn't be long before fans start hearing rumors about who could be stepping into roles like Kakashi, Iruka, and the many other iconic characters from the Hidden Leaf Village.
Although production is finally moving ahead, Lionsgate still hasn't announced a release date or even a release window for the film.
Cretton is directing the live-action Naruto movie and is also co-writing the screenplay with Tasha Huo. He's producing the film alongside Jeyun Munford through Hisako, with Avi Arad, Ari Arad, Emmy Yu of Arad Productions, and Jeremy Latcham also serving as producers.
Perhaps the most encouraging part of the project is that Kishimoto himself remains directly involved with the adaptation. Exactly what role he's playing creatively hasn't been revealed, but having the series creator participating should give fans some confidence that the spirit of Naruto won't get lost as it makes the jump from manga and anime to live action.
After years of wondering when this movie would finally become a reality, it looks like the Hidden Leaf Village is getting ready to open its gates. If filming really begins in January 2027.
