Neon’s THEY FOLLOW Expands Cast With Jackie Earle Haley, Michael Gandolfini, Justine Lupe, and More
The mysterious world of It Follows is finally taking shape again, and the cast for its long-awaited sequel just got a whole lot more exciting.
Writer and director David Robert Mitchell has added ten new actors to the ensemble for They Follow, the upcoming horror sequel from Neon.
Joining the film are Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), Justine Lupe (Succession), Anna Mirodin (Ivan), Jayne Taini (Unbelievable), Michael Gandolfini (Daredevil: Born Again), Tom Pecinka (Stereophonic), Melora Walters (Magnolia), Ben Krieger (Song Sung Blue), Natalie Shinnick (The Brutalist), and Jan Hoag (The Fabelmans).
They'll join returning star Maika Monroe, who reprises her role after helping make the original film a modern horror classic. Also officially joining the project is Naomi Ackie, whose casting had been in the works and has now been confirmed.
As for what the sequel is actually about, Mitchell and Neon are keeping that locked away. The only story detail that's been revealed is that They Follow takes place a decade after the events of the original movie.
Released in 2015, It Follows introduced audiences to Jay Height, played by Monroe, a college student whose life is turned upside down after a sexual encounter leaves her cursed by an unstoppable supernatural force.
The entity can take the appearance of anyone, patiently walking toward its victim without ever stopping. The only way to escape the curse is to pass it on to someone else through sex, creating one of the most memorable horror concepts of the last decade.
After premiering to rave reviews at Cannes in 2014, it was acquired by Radius-TWC and went on to become one of the defining horror movies of the 2010s. Made for a little over $1 million, the film earned roughly $23 million at the box office while launching Monroe into the spotlight and elevating Mitchell's career as a filmmaker.
Mitchell is once again writing and directing They Follow, continuing the story from his own script. Neon has worldwide rights to They Follow and will release the film in U.S. theaters.
It's great to see Mitchell finally returning to the unsettling universe he created over a decade ago.
