Netflix Confirms New FEAR STREET Movie is in Development

For those of you who enjoyed Netflix’s R-rated trilogy adaptation of R.L. Stine’s Fear Street, you’ll be happy to hear that a new film is currently in development. The news comes from Netflix Films’ Scott Stuber, who confirmed the news with Collider, saying:

“Obviously, there’s a lot of books. There’s one stand-alone that we’re working on right now that we’re once again trying to get the script right, but I like it very much, and so does the team. So I feel like if we can get that script right there would be a great kind of extension of that franchise.”

Stuber didn’t share any further details about the project, but it will be interesting to see what story it will tell. It’s hard to guess because like Stuber said, there are a lot of books!

Stine previously offered an update on the franchise saying that they will “probably” make more Fear Street movies. He said:

“I’ve done everything you can think of and it’s all so far beyond what I ever dreamed. When we started out I said, ‘Let’s do two or three [Goosebumps books].’ I never dreamed that it would last this long. It’s all a big surprise to me. I’m excited to have a new TV show going [Disney+’s Goosebumps] and we’ll probably do more Fear Street movies too, and you know, that’s a thrill for me.”

The last we heard about the series, it was said that “Netflix is very deep into development on more Fear Street!” Stine also said:

“I…hear rumors about more Fear Street movies for Netflix, because the first ones did so well last summer. Those films kind of shocked me, because they were all R-rated, and I’ve never done anything R-rated! All those teenagers were getting slashed. I was like, ‘Suddenly, I have a slasher movie!’”

The director of the films, Leigh Janiak, is hoping these first movies are the start of a Marvel-style horror cinematic universe. She said:

“One of the exciting things about ‘Fear Street’ is the fact that the universe is big and allows for a lot of space. One of the things that I talked about before I was hired was that we have a potential here to create a horror Marvel [Cinematic Universe], where you can have slasher killers from lots of different eras. You have the canon of our main mythology that’s built around the fact that the devil lives in Shadyside, so there’s also room for everything else.

“I think that my hope is that audiences like it enough that we can start building out [more], we can think about what another trilogy would be, what stand-alones would be, what TV would be. I don’t even think about it like TV or movies exactly anymore. That’s the great thing about Netflix and about what ‘Fear Street’ is, which is kind of a hybrid new thing. I’m excited about the possibility of what else can happen.”

The three films were based on Stine’s novels that were set in the town of Shadyside. The original series lasted for 51 novels. The three movies were released over the course of three weeks, and they tell one killer story about the sinister history of the town of Shadyside. In 1994, a group of teenagers discovered that the terrifying events that have haunted their town for generations may all be connected. It’s a murder mystery horror story, and the group of teens that the story centers around may be the next target.

Fear Street: 1994 - In 1994, in the aftermath of a brutal tragedy in Shadyside, Ohio, a group of teens discover that a series of horrifying events that have plagued their town over many years might not be random, and that they may be the next victims.

Fear Street: 1978 - In 1978, Camp Nightwing is divided by the campers and counselors who hail from the of prosperous town of Sunnyvale and the campers and maintenance staffers from the downtrodden town of Shadyside, but when horrors from their towns shared history come alive, they must band together to solve a terrifying mystery before it’s too late.

Fear Street: 1666 - In 1666, a colonial town is gripped by a hysterical witch-hunt that has deadly consequences for centuries to come, and it’s up to teenagers in 1994 to try and finally put an end to their town’s curse, before it’s too late.

I enjoyed these movies and I’m looking forward to seeing what Netflix and the creative team has planned for the next set of films!
