Netflix's Live-Action PERSONA Series Reportedly in Development With the STRANGER THINGS Team

Netflix is adding another major video game franchise to its growing slate of adaptations. According to a new report from Variety, a live-action series based on Persona is reportedly in development, bringing Atlus' hugely popular RPG franchise into the world of live-action television.

If the project moves forward, it will reunite Netflix with 21 Laps, the production company responsible for Stranger Things, while also assembling a creative team with plenty of experience in genre storytelling.

Christopher Monfette has signed on to write the series while also serving as showrunner and executive producer. Monfette's previous credits include 12 Monkeys, Star Trek: Picard, and 9-1-1. He's also currently working as a writer and co-executive producer on Marvel Studios' upcoming Disney+ series VisionQuest.

Joining him are executive producers Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Robert Atwood through 21 Laps. Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson will executive produce through Story Kitchen, while Toru Nakahara will represent SEGA as an executive producer. Emily Feher is overseeing the project for 21 Laps as part of the company's overall television deal with Netflix.

One of the biggest questions surrounding the adaptation is exactly which Persona story it plans to tell. At the moment, Netflix isn't revealing whether the series will adapt one of the existing games or tell an original story set within the franchise's supernatural universe.

That leaves plenty of room for speculation. Fans are already wondering if the series could focus on SEES from Persona 3, the Investigation Team from Persona 4, the Phantom Thieves from Persona 5, or introduce an entirely new group of characters.

Considering the franchise has expanded across five mainline games, multiple spin-offs, and several remakes since its debut in 1996, there's certainly no shortage of material to explore.

The timing couldn't be better for the franchise either. Persona 5 introduced millions of players to the Phantom Thieves when it launched in 2016, with Persona 5 Royal expanding that adventure in 2024.

The series continues to grow with Persona 5: The Phantom X, which launched in 2025, while Persona 6 was officially confirmed to be in development in June 2026. Fans also have Persona 4 Revival to look forward to when it arrives in February 2027.

For now, though, Netflix is keeping everything under wraps. There are no story details, no casting announcements, and no indication of when the series might arrive, so fans will have plenty of time to theorize about which direction the adaptation will take.

21 Laps has built an impressive résumé with Netflix through hits like Stranger Things, The Perfect Couple, and Last Man Standing. The company has also produced films including Deadpool & Wolverine and the upcoming Backrooms, with Levy directing and co-writing Deadpool & Wolverine.

Story Kitchen has also become one of the industry's go-to companies for adapting video games into film and television. Along with Persona, the company is developing live-action versions of Tomb Raider and Life Is Strange.

Should the series make it to the screen, Persona will become the latest addition to Netflix's growing collection of video game adaptations. The streamer has already found success with series like Arcane, Devil May Cry, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.

There's still a long road ahead before fans get to see what this adaptation looks like, but with one of gaming's most celebrated RPG franchises and the creative team behind Stranger Things attached, this is definitely a project worth keeping an eye on.
