Neve Campbell Says She Was Disappointed That Dewy Was Killed Off in SCREAM V
Scream franchise star Neve Campbell recently opened up about how she feels about the major death of David Arquette’s Dewy in Scream V. This was a pretty shocking moment for fans, one that a lot of fans were disappointed with, and joining them in their disappointment is Campbell.
While at the Monster-Mania 2023 Convention, she shared her thoughts on Dewy and how she didn’t want to see the character killed off.
"I was so sad about Dewey’s death. I thought it was tragic and I don’t usually like to criticize the writing in these projects. [But] I was really disappointed in their choice to get rid of David. He’s so... I mean Dewey’s such a wonderful character and I think we were all in love with him and I think we all felt pretty sad about that. Which of course is the reason they do it cause it has more impact, but now I miss him. I want to see more of him."
Dewy had gone through all kinds of insanity in this franchise and he survived a lot of physical and emotional trauma, so to kill him off the way that they did was sad. I don’t think Wes Craven would’ve gone that route as he had more respect for the character.
Scream V Directors, Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, obviously had a different vision, and they previously explained:
"I think you have to watch your heroes die in order to create room for new stories and to watch how that affects the characters. I think as long as those deaths inform character in a way that is meaningful and significant, then it's worth breaking those eggs, as hard as it is."
I guess that’s one way to rationalize their decision and help them sleep better at night. What did you all think about Dewy being killed off?
