New Bigfoot Documentary CAPTURING BIGFOOT Reveals Incredible 4K Scan of Legendary 1967 Footage

One of the most famous pieces of footage in Bigfoot history has received a major 4K upgrade, giving us our clearest look yet at the mysterious creature that Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin claimed to have encountered nearly 60 years ago.

The newly restored Patterson-Gimlin film was scanned directly from the original 16mm footage, and the results are pretty incredible. The footage is being released ahead of the upcoming documentary Capturing Bigfoot, which explores the story behind one of the most controversial and fascinating recordings ever captured on film.

The original footage was shot on October 20, 1967, in the forests of Northern California. It shows a large, hairy, humanlike figure walking through a clearing before turning to glance toward the camera. Whether it's an actual Bigfoot or an elaborate hoax has been debated for decades, but the footage remains a fascinating piece of unexplained history.

When I was a kid, I remember being completely fascinated by photos from this footage. There was something about that strange creature walking through the woods that captured my imagination.

I also remember seeing the actual footage on TV for the first time while watching the classic series Unsolved Mysteries. That show made everything mysterious feel a little more terrifying, and seeing Bigfoot walking across that clearing was so wild to me. It certainly made me wonder what might actually be hiding out in the wilderness.

Now, thanks to this new 4K scan, fans can examine the footage in greater detail than ever before. You can watch it below.

The museum-quality restoration was created directly from the original 16mm film preserved in the Patterson family collection. It's considered the cleanest and highest-quality version of the recording available, and it will officially replace the old VHS copy that the family previously used for licensing requests.

The restoration was completed for Capturing Bigfoot, a new documentary directed by Marq Evans. The documentary revisits the history of the Patterson-Gimlin film while exploring the people and relationships connected to its creation.

According to the official synopsis, the footage “became the most analyzed and debated in history. Fifty-nine years later, a reel of 16mm film discovered in a safe changes everything.”

The film will also explore the untold story “behind the world’s greatest mystery, told for the first time by Patterson’s own son and the people who were there. This is a story about family legacy, broken friendships, and belief itself.”

Evans has a personal connection to the story as his father grew up around people associated with the original 1967 filming, meaning Bigfoot has been part of the director's life since childhood.

Evans explained that he always knew he would eventually make a Bigfoot documentary, “not because the creature itself held any mystique for me, but because the story had been circulating through my blood since childhood, passed down like some strange inheritance from my father.”

I've always enjoyed a good Bigfoot mystery, and seeing this legendary footage cleaned up in 4K is pretty cool. After all these years, it's amazing that people are still examining the Patterson-Gimlin film and trying to figure out exactly what we're looking at.

Will the enhanced footage finally convince anyone that Bigfoot exists? Probably not, but it certainly gives enthusiasts and skeptics something new to examine.

Capturing Bigfoot arrives in theaters on October 20, 2026, exactly 59 years after Patterson and Gimlin filmed their legendary encounter.
