New Detailed Plot Information For THOR: RAGNAROK Revealed!

Yesterday we were treated to our first look at Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok that you can check out here and here. I loved what I saw and that it looks different from anything we've seen before in the franchise. Thanks to EW, we now have some actual plot details to share with you for the Taika Waititi-directed movie. Here's what they say:

When we last saw Thor, he was flying off to figure out who was manipulating the Avengers at the end of Age of Ultron. Eventually, he hears rumblings of trouble in Asgard: His evil brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), has been impersonating their missing father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins). Loki’s rather lax governing leads to the reemergence of an imprisoned Hela (Cate Blanchett). Thor’s initial encounter with Hela gets him blasted to Sakaar, a barbaric planet ruled by the charming but nefarious Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum). Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), a tough, hard-drinking warrior hiding out on Sakaar brings the god to the Grandmaster. Thor is then forced into becoming a gladiator, which leads to his haircut and the loss of his trusty hammer."

When talking about the Valkyrie, Chris Hemsworth says, "Thor is a bit of a fanboy for the Valkyrie, the elite women warriors." When it comes to the loss of his hammer, as we saw in the recently revealed EW cover photo, he'll be wielding two badass swords.

The report goes on to say that Sakaar's most popular and successful gladiator is Bruce Banner, a.k.a. the Hulk. As many of you already know, this is part of the main plot of the Planet Hulk comic series. About his character, Mark Ruffalo says:

“He’s much more of a character than the green rage machine you’ve seen in the Avengers movies. He’s got a swagger. He’s like a god.”

Thor and Hulk will unite on the planet of Sakaar and from there they will embark on an adventure filled cosmic road trip together. The story is said to draw inspiration from movies like 48 HRS.Withnail and I, and even Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

One of the things that the director wanted to highlight and utilize in the film is Hemsworth's comedic flare. Waititi says, "He’s so good and underutilized in that department. He’s legitimately one of the funniest things in this film." This is something that I'm actually looking forward to seeing in the film.

It's also revealed that that Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange, who Thor met with in the post-credits scene for Doctor Strange, will help the Thor find Odin. This is one of the few parts in the story that takes place on Earth. Waititi goes on to say that Thor: Ragnarok will reinvent the franchise:

“A lot of what we’re doing with the film is, in a way, kind of dismantling and destroying the old idea and rebuilding it in a new way that’s fresh. Everyone’s got a slightly new take on their characters, so in that way, it feels like [this is] the first Thor."

That's actually a really interesting comment. I actually liked the first two Thor films, but it sounds like this one is going to be the one that actually blows fans away.

Of course, the film will also help set up the events of Avengers: Infinity War. The movie comes out on November 3rd, and I can't wait to see our first footage from it! This movie sounds like it's going to be an absolute blast!
