New Details on Jean Grey's Transformation in X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX
Some new details have been revealed about Jean Grey's transformation into the Phoenix in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and once again they are changing up the source material. It probably won't matter at this point as this will probably be the last X-Men film made without Marvel's involvement.
Instead of making the Phoenix some sort of powerful, cosmic entity like in the comics, there will be a point where the use of Jean's powers will trigger the dark transformation within her. If this sounds familiar, it's because it's the same thing that Brett Ratner did in X-Men 3. It's explained in EW:
After they’re dispatched to space for a rescue mission, a solar flare hits the X-Jet and the surge of energy ignites a malevolent, power-hungry new force within Jean (Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner)— the Phoenix.
Director Simon Kinberg offers the additional details, saying:
"Jean absorbs those solar flares and then hurls them back out into space. That’s what triggers, awakens, creates this Phoenix force and voice inside her. What appears to the world to be another heroic victory by the X-Men in saving stranded people in space we realize is the the thing that begins the unraveling of Jean and the unraveling of secrets Charles told her."
There's even a photo that was released yesterday that features Jean Grey floating and glowing in space outside of the shuttle. It's a cool visual that you can check out below. In regards to that setting, producer Hutch Parker says:
“They might be the biggest set pieces we’ve ever done. The space [set piece] is one of the biggest things we’ve ever done. Overall visual effects, scale of action and spectacle, it’s probably the biggest we’ve done but much more in the service of these characters and their conflict than for scale sake.”
We'll just have to wait and see how this all actually turns out. I hope it's good! If not, it looks like Marvel is going to get the rights to these character's back soon.
What do you think about the direction they are taking this new X-Men film? You can read more details on the story here and see some additional images here.
The movie is set to open in theaters on November 2, 2018.
