New Details on TWISTER Sequel Which Won't Continue The Story of the Original Film

The classic 1996 tornado disaster film Twister is getting a sequel titled Twisters that is being directed by Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) and the writer of the film, Mark L. Smith, opened up about the film and what fans can expect from it.

One thing that the writer revealed is that the sequel will not continue the story of the original film, but said that it’s a wild ride. During an interview with Collider, Smith shared:

“It’s a lot of fun. [Director Lee Isaac Chung] did his own thing to the script a little bit because that’s what they do, so I don’t know about some of the changes exactly. So, I don’t know the details, but it’s a separate story. It’s not a continuation of the original. But it’s just a real wild ride with some good, fun characters. Hopefully, we can tap into what the original had because that thing is just iconic. But it’s so cool to have a director like Isaac taking on something like this. It’s just so out of his norm, and I think he’s having fun. I was texting with him a couple days ago, and it’s just all craziness of it.”

The movie was originally announced as a remake and a couple of years later it was declared a sequel by Universal Pictures describing it as “a new chapter from the 1996 movie.” Smith went on to say:

“I talked to so many storm experts, tornado experts, storm chasers, and rode around with some. Even the tornado season itself, because of climate change, what used to be tornado alley going through a certain stretch. It now extends so further east, and it’s moving across, and the dates are wider, and the numbers are higher, and the storms themselves are more violent. So we did use elements of that just to shine a light on it, as well, the causes and effects of climate change.”

It was previously reported that the studio was hoping to get Helen Hunt back and tell a story that focuses on the daughter that her character had with Bill Paxton’s character. It was explained that she has caught the storm-chasing bug her parents had. I have no idea if that is still the plan for the story or not. Hunt has not been listed in the cast, though.

The movie stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack, Maura Tierney, Harry Hadden-Paton, Sasha Lane, Kieran Shipka, Nik Dodani, David Corenswet, Tunde Adebimpe, and Katy O’Brian.

The original movie follows a group of storm chasers who are trying to deploy a revolutionary new weather instrument that can track and predict tornadoes. Along the way, they encounter a series of dangerous tornadoes, putting their lives in peril as they race to collect valuable data and save lives.

Twisters is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 19, 2024.
