New Trailer for Taika Waititi's Inspirational Sports Comedy NEXT GOAL WINS
Searchlight Pictures has released a new trailer for director Taika Waititi’s upcoming inspirational sports comedy Next Goal Wins. The film is a heartfelt underdog comedy, and this new trailer is more of a featurette for the film as it features the director talking about the film’s story and why he wanted to tell it.
The movie follows the “American Samoa soccer team, infamous for their brutal 31-0 FIFA loss in 2001. With the World Cup Qualifiers approaching, the team hires down-on-his lick, maverick coach Thomas Rongen hoping he will turn the world’s worst soccer team around.”
When talking about the film, Waititi said: "It's the ultimate underdog story. It taking place in Polynesia is very important to me, because it's my people. We stick together. It was like seeing myself up there, seeing my family up there, when I saw that documentary, which is so perfect in many ways. And to have a broader audiences have access to that story was one of my main goals. To bring our backyard to people, and to put brown faces on screen was a big deal for me. I just loved it."
He also: "Rugby is the national sport in New Zealand, but it's about underdogs, and I just love underdog stories. Most of my films are about people who live on the margins, or are a little bit left out, and it just fit right in for me. It's a true story, but it's got all the elements that all the great sports films have. It's basically the Cool Runnings of soccer."
Michael Fassbender stars in the film as Coach Rongen, and he’s joined by Elisabeth Moss as Rongen's ex-wife and Will Arnett as a fictional soccer executive. The film's cast also includes David Fane, Beulah Koale, Lehi Falepapalangi, Semu Filipo, Uli Latukefu, and Rachel House.
The movie was co-written by Waititi and Iain Morrisit and it will be released on November 17th!
