New FORBIDDEN PLANET Movie in Development at Warner Bros. From Writer Brian K. Vaughan
Warner Bros. is developing a remake of the 1956 sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet. The movie will be written by comic book and screenwriter Brian K. Vaughan (Runaways, Under The Dome, Lost), and it will be produced by Emma Watts.
James Cameron once attempted to make this movie, but due to the complicated rights issues, he was never able to move forward with it. WB managed to clear that hurdle and they are now moving forward with their own project.
The original film is set in the 23rd century. The story follows Commander John J. Adams and the crew of the United Planets starship C-57D as they are sent to the distant planet Altair IV to investigate the disappearance of a previous expedition.
When they arrive, they discover Dr. Edward Morbius, a survivor who lives in isolation with his daughter Altaira and their advanced robot servant, Robby. Morbius reveals that the rest of the expedition was mysteriously killed, and he has since uncovered remnants of an ancient and highly advanced alien civilization known as the Krell.
These aliens built a massive underground machine capable of materializing thoughts into reality, but their civilization was destroyed by the unintended consequences of this technology.
As the crew explores the planet, they encounter a mysterious, invisible force that threatens their lives. It is ultimately revealed that the "monster" is a manifestation of Dr. Morbius's subconscious mind, amplified by the Krell's machine.
His own repressed desires and fears have become a destructive force, leading to the deaths of the previous expedition members.
The original film is fantastic! But, I like those old sci-fi films from the 50s and 60s. I was excited about the remake when Cameron was looking to make it. Hopefully, this new creative team will put together a great story and team to bring this reimagining of Forbidden Planet to life.
