New GAME OF THRONES Prequel Series Officially a Go at Max Titled A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS: THE HEDGE KNIGHT

A new Game of Thrones prequel series has officially been greenlit by Max (formerly known as HBO Max), and it’s titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight.

This project has been in development for some time already and it’s inspired by George R.R. Martin’s book Tales of Dunk and Egg, which is a series of fantasy novellas. This is going to make for a very interesting series, and I was hoping that it would get made!

The stories follow the adventures of the hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall, who would become a legendary member of the Kingsguard, and his squire Egg, who would become King Aegon V Targaryen of Westeros. The stories are set 90 years prior to the events of A Song of Ice and Fire.

The official synopsis reads: “A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros … a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”

There are novellas that have been published including The Hedge Knight (1998), The Sworn Sword (2003), and The Mystery Knight (2010). A collection of the three novellas, with illustrations by Gary Gianni, was published as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in 2015.

This is the second prequel series to be picked up by Max, after last year’s House of the Dragon. It will be written and executive produced by Martin and House of the Dragon producer Ira Parker and executive produced by Ryan Condal and Vince Gerardis.
