Five A-List Actors Reportedly Passed on Hal Jordan Role in LANTERNS Series Before Kyle Chandler Signed On

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, Bloodline) was cast in the role of Hal Jordan in James Gunn’s upcoming DC series, Lanterns.

We knew that Josh Brolin had passed on the part a few weeks ago, but a new rumor claims that he was one in a long line of A-listers that wouldn’t touch the role after the laughable 2011 movie, Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds.

According to industry scooper Jeff Sneider, at least 5 big-name movie stars turned Gunn down when approached for the Hal Jordan role, largely because they felt there was too much baggage surrounding the superhero. Brolin was confirmed to be one actor who refused the role, but others were Matthew McConaughey and Chris Pine.

I like all those actors, but I am also a fan of Chandler, and I think he will do well in the series.

It was previously teased in reports that the Lanterns version of Hal Jordan will be a grizzled, veteran Green Lantern in the series, which is said to be taking its cues from the likes of HBO's True Detective.

The series will focus on new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

The project is being developed by Ozark’s Chris Mundy, Watchmen‘s Damon Lindelof, and comic book writer Tom King.

Stay tuned for updates as the series develops.
