New SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Rumor Has Fans Worried About a Massive Peter Parker Retcon

We're just a week away from the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and the rumor mill is working overtime. Now, new batch of alleged plot leaks has surfaced online. If there's any truth to them, Peter Parker could be headed for one of the biggest changes in the character's history.

The latest rumors don't just tease answers about Peter's strange new abilities. They suggest Marvel Studios could be setting him up as a key figure in the MCU's mutant future. It's a twist that would reshape Spider-Man's place in the franchise, and judging by the online reaction, plenty of fans aren't exactly thrilled about it.

The newest claims come from 4chan, which has earned a reputation over the years for being one of the least reliable places for movie leaks. At the same time, it's also worth remembering that some surprisingly accurate details for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, including Gamora's (Zoe Saldaña) sacrifice for the Soul Stone and the unexpected return of Red Skull (Ross Marquand), first appeared there months before those films hit theaters.

That doesn't automatically make these new rumors legitimate, but it also means they can't be written off completely. Especially since several pieces line up with what we've already seen.

According to the posts, Sadie Sink is indeed playing Jean Grey, and she'll eventually reveal that Peter Parker (Tom Holland) has always carried the mutant gene. Instead of giving Peter his powers, the radioactive spider bite supposedly awakened abilities that had been dormant all along.

That revelation would explain why Peter's body suddenly begins changing in unexpected ways. His organic webbing, mysterious blackouts, and the unsettling black-eyed transformation teased in the trailers would all be tied to a secondary mutation that develops as he grows older.

The rumor compares Peter's evolution to Emma Frost, whose psychic abilities manifested first before her diamond form emerged later in life.

If that wasn't enough, the leaks also claim Marvel is preparing a soft reboot of the MCU following the Multiverse Saga, with Spider-Man becoming the bridge into an X-Men-focused future.

Apparently, that role was originally intended for Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), who became the MCU's first confirmed mutant. However, after The Marvels struggled at the box office and Kamala's popularity reportedly cooled, Marvel is said to have shifted its attention toward its biggest star.

Another rumor even connects this to an upcoming Marvel Comics storyline involving an X-Gene virus that spreads across heroes and civilians. Spider-Man is reportedly immune, something Peter initially attributes to his unique biology before learning it was actually evidence that he had been a mutant all along.

It didn't take long for these rumors to make their way to Reddit, where fans had plenty to say about the possibility.

One user, TheMegaWhopper, wrote: “Retconning Spider-Man into a mutant is bad and is gonna piss off A LOT of people.” ButtersMojito didn't hold back either: “There are a lot of bad decisions in recent MCU, but that would be the worst of them all.”

Not everyone completely rejected the idea, though. IntelligentRead9310 took a more middle-of-the-road approach, saying: “It’s a dumb and unnecessary change, but as long as he still gets bit by a spider as his origin, I can deal with it, I suppose.”

The strongest criticism came from BlindedBraille, who argued: “Spider-Man becomes a hero because of circumstance. That’s literally the whole point of the character. He’s the everyday man who stepped up. Making him a mutant undermines that idea.”

Whether these leaks end up being accurate or not, there are a few interesting details that make the theory feel more plausible than it might seem at first glance.

The MCU already used a nearly identical concept with Kamala Khan in the Ms. Marvel finale, where it was revealed that her bangle didn't create her powers but activated a dormant mutant gene. That's essentially the exact explanation these rumors now apply to Peter Parker.

There's also Damage Control, which has gradually transformed from the cleanup crew introduced in Spider-Man: Homecoming into a far more aggressive organization.

William Metzger (Tramell Tillman) is pulled directly from Marvel Comics, where he leads an anti-mutant militia, making his appearance in Brand New Day especially interesting if mutants are becoming a larger focus.

Then there's Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), who reportedly helps Peter investigate technology designed to suppress uncontrolled mutations. That's another detail that fits neatly with long-established concepts from X-Men comics involving mutant inhibitors.

Outside the movie itself, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has made it clear that the end of the Multiverse Saga leads directly into the age of mutants and the X-Men.

He's openly discussed finally bringing those characters into the MCU now that Marvel has the rights back, and an X-Men film is already in development with Jake Schreier, fresh off directing Thunderbolts*. Recent casting activity also suggests Marvel is actively building that next chapter.

None of that confirms Peter Parker is about to be revealed as a mutant, of course. But if Marvel really wants Spider-Man to become the connective tissue between the Multiverse Saga and the X-Men era, this rumored direction would certainly accomplish that.
