New SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Synopsis Teases Its Mysterious Invisible Villain and Peter Parker’s Biggest Challenge Yet
Fans have been waiting a long time to see where Peter Parker’s story goes next in the MCU, and now we finally have a much clearer idea of what Spider-Man: Brand New Day has in store.
Following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter has been living in a world that no longer remembers who he is. His friends have moved on, his identity has been erased from everyone's memory, and he's been left to carry the burden of being Spider-Man completely on his own.
Now, with the next chapter arriving next summer, Sony Pictures has released an updated synopsis, after the trailer that was released, that offers some intriguing new details about the story and its mysterious villain.
The official synopsis reads: "It's a BRAND NEW DAY for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control.
“But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them."
Not only is Peter struggling with isolation and the emotional fallout of No Way Home, but he's also dealing with some sort of transformation that could become both a curse and a weapon.
Sony's earlier synopsis offered even more context about Peter's situation: "After the record-breaking global success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks an entirely new chapter for Peter Parker and Spider-Man.
“Four years have passed since the events of No Way Home, and Peter is now an adult living entirely alone, having voluntarily erased himself from the lives and memories of those he loves.
“Crime-fighting in a New York that no longer knows his name, he's devoted himself entirely to protecting his city — a full-time Spider-Man — but as the demands on him intensify, the pressure sparks a surprising physical evolution that threatens his existence, even as a strange new pattern of crimes gives rise to one of the most powerful threats he has ever faced."
The biggest mystery continues to be the villain. The latest synopsis specifically describes the threat as "a powerful villain no one can even see," and we’ve seen this character in action in the trailer. There’s a lot of speculation about who the real antagonist might be.
I think it’s pretty obvious this character is Sadie Sink, whose role remains one of the movie's best-kept secrets. Rumors have consistently linked the actress to Jean Grey, potentially setting up the X-Men hero's MCU debut. While neither Sony nor Marvel Studios has confirmed that casting rumor.
If she does turn out to be Jean Grey, it's possible her story arc will paint her as a possible villain, but later reveal that she’s not. She could be investigating the same psychic threat as Spider-Man, putting them at odds before eventually joining forces.
That scenario would explain why the two characters might clash early in the story while still allowing Jean to enter the MCU as a hero rather than an antagonist.
What little footage has been shown so far suggests that the central threat possesses mind-control abilities. That's a power comic book fans immediately associate with Jean Grey, but she's far from the only Marvel character capable of manipulating minds.
Peter Parker's rogues gallery includes several villains with similar abilities, making it difficult to pinpoint exactly who is pulling the strings.
As for potential villains, names like Mister Negative and Spider-Queen have been floated by fans as possibilities, though neither character has been officially connected to the project. What we do know is that several classic Spider-Man villains are expected to appear, including Tombstone, Boomerang, and Tarantula.
Whatever is really happening in Brand New Day, it sounds like Marvel and Sony are taking Peter Parker into some strange and unexpected territory. A forgotten hero, a mysterious transformation, mind-control powers, and a villain nobody can see feels very different from the multiversal spectacle of No Way Home.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31.
