New SPIDER-MAN Writers on How They Landed The Marvel Gig

Yesterday, the two guys who will be writing the script for Spider-Man for Marvel and Sony, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, talked a little bit about their version of Peter Parker and why they are the right guys for the job. Now in a separate interview with Deadline, they revealed how exactly they ended up landing the gig:

"Our agent helped get our foot in the door with Marvel, sending them a script we had written, and letting them know our track record and that we’d love to move from broad comedy to action and action comedy. Also, it helped that Kevin Feige wanted to draw on the spirit of John Hughes for this Spider-Man, and we had just written and directed a sequel to a John Hughes-created franchise with Vacation. We’d pitched ourselves to both write and direct, and so our pitch included a pretty extensive story outline that appealed to them. After Jon Watts got the directing job, they came back and asked if we would be interested in doing the script."

I really do love the fact that Marvel and the creative team are inspired by the films of John Hughes. I would have loved to see what a John Hughes Spider-Man film would look like! It seems like this new Spider-Man film is going to be the closest thing we get to that with Jon Watts at the helm. I really hope they are able to actually capture that Hughes spirit and implement it into the character and story. As a fan of his movies, that’s something that would make this movie even better.

The untitled Spider-Man movie will be released on July 28th, 2017. There's no doubt that we'll learn a lot more about this project over the next couple of years.
