SPIDER-MAN Writers Discuss Peter Parker and Taking on the New Project
Not long ago we learned that Vacation screenwriters John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein were hired to write the script for the upcoming Marvel and Sony co-production of Spider-Man. For the first time since the news was reported, the filmmakers spoke about taking on the project with NPR, and this is what they said when asked if they could confirm that they were writing it.
Daley: “We can finally acknowledge that.”
Goldstein: “We've been saying no comment for the last week.”
Daley: “This is the first time that we can say that we are writing it.”
Goldstein: “We're thrilled.”
Daley also talked a little bit about the character that they will be writing for, and why he feels they are the right guys for the job.
“He's a sharp kid and witty and kind of deals with the fact that he's an outcast and a geek through humor. It is sort of the safety net for geeks like us, so I think we can totally relate to where he's coming from. As well as the superpowers, which we also have.”
These guys are talented comedy writers, and I’m curious to how exactly they handle this character and bring him to life for audiences. I’ve actually enjoyed both film versions of the characters that we’ve seen so far — Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, but I know with Marvel involved this time around, fans are hoping to see the best live-action version of Spider-Man yet.
Jon Watts (Cop Car) is directing the untitled Spider-Man reboot, and so far it stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Marisa Tomei as Aunt May. The movie is scheduled to open in theaters on July 28, 2017. The new version of the web-slinger will make his first appearance Captain America: Civil War on May 6th, 2016.
