New Trailer For Live-Action SAKAMOTO DAYS Awesomely Brings the Anime Chaos to Life
Toho has released another teaser trailer for the upcoming live-action adaptation of Sakamoto Days, and it’s doubling down on exactly what fans love about the manga and anime.
This isn’t a grounded reimagining or a gritty reinterpretation. It’s a full-on anime-to-big-screen translation, complete with exaggerated action, visual gags, and the very specific charm that made the series a hit in the first place.
If you’ve already seen the anime, which hit Netflix earlier this year, this trailer will feel instantly familiar. The movie leans hard into a shot-for-shot approach, right down to Taro Sakamoto’s opaque glasses and his deceptively mellow presence.
Once known as the deadliest assassin alive, Sakamoto walked away from that world after falling in love. These days he’s happily married, raising a daughter, and running a small neighborhood convenience store called Sakamoto Store. He’s also very, very out of shape, at least on the surface.
That quiet life doesn’t last long. When a massive bounty lands on his head, assassins from all over start closing in, forcing Sakamoto to defend his family and livelihood.
The twist is that he doesn’t rely on traditional weapons. Anything nearby becomes fair game, turning everyday objects into tools of absolute mayhem. It’s goofy, creative, and exactly as over-the-top as it should be.
The film stars Ren Meguro as Sakamoto Taro, fully embracing the idea of the “fat assassin” without sanding off the edges to make it more palatable. Aya Ueto plays Aoi Sakamoto, with Fumiya Takahashi and Miyu Yoshimoto rounding out the main cast.
What really stands out is how committed the production is to the anime’s tone. The movie doesn’t try to explain away the absurdity. It looks like it celebrates it.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Sakamoto Taro (starring Ren Meguro), the hitman hailed as "the strongest in history." One day, he fell in love—and abruptly retired from killing!
“After marriage and the birth of his daughter, Sakamoto became the manager of a small local shop. He had become so fat... he bore no resemblance to his former self!! But suddenly, a 1 billion yen bounty was placed on his head, and assassins from around the world converged. An adaptation of the wildly popular battle action manga Sakamoto Days, which has taken the world by storm.”
Toho will release the Sakamoto Days movie in Japan starting April 29th, 2026. There’s no US release date set yet.
