Nicolas Cage Explains Why SUPERMAN LIVES is More Powerful Than Any of the Superman Films That Have Been Made
In the early 1990s, Tim Burton and Nicolas Cage teamed up to give us a Superman film called Superman Lives. The movie never made it to production and was ultimately canceled by Warner Bros. I remember when the first photo of Cage dressed up as Superman surfaced. The fan community exploded with all kinds of emotions. That was followed by more photos and even test footage. There was even a documentary made about the unmade film called The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?!
The unmade movie is the stuff of legend and fans wonder how the finished product would have looked. At this point, the movie only lives in our imaginations and according to Cage, that is the reason what Superman Lives is better than any other Superman film that has ever been made.
When talking to Entertainment Weekly about the film, he said:
"I would offer that the movie that Tim and I would have made, in your imagination, is more powerful than any of the Superman movies. I didn’t even have to make the movie and we all know what that movie would have been in your imagination. That is the Superman. That is the movie. Even though you never saw it—it is the Superman."
Ok. So there you have it folks! "Even though you never saw it—it is the Superman." That has got to be one of the greatest statement ever. Cage had a similar thing to say about the film in a previous interview with Yahoo in which he said:
“I would’ve loved to have seen it, but I feel that in many ways, it was sort of a win-win because of the power of the imagination. I think people can actually see the movie in their minds now and imagine it and in many ways that might resonate more deeply than the finished project.”
I get the whole imagination thing, and how it's limitless, but let's be honest, it probably would have been so much better to see the finished film up on the big screen. It could have turned out to be amazing, it could have turned out to be a piece of crap, either way, the movie was destined to go down in history in some way.
