Nicolas Cage Returns as Yuri Orlov in First Teaser Trailer for LORDS OF WAR

Nicolas Cage is back in the arms-dealing business, and this time, he's got some serious family problems. Vertical has released the first teaser trailer for Lords of War, the long-awaited sequel to the 2005 cult classic Lord of War, and Yuri Orlov is about to find out that his biggest competition shares his DNA.

It's been 22 years since Cage first played the notorious international arms dealer in writer-director Andrew Niccol's dark comedy crime thriller. Now, Cage is returning to the role alongside Bill Skarsgård, who plays Yuri's son Anton, a ruthless mercenary determined to build an empire bigger than his father's.

The sequel picks up years after Yuri's dealings with a militia in Sierra Leone, with the infamous weapons dealer still operating in a dangerous world of international conflict. His business takes a nasty turn when he discovers that a powerful new rival is actually his son.

Anton has been assembling a massive private army of mercenaries to fight in America's Middle Eastern conflicts, putting him on a collision course with his father. The two end up competing for power, influence, and even the same woman, turning their already complicated family relationship into a violent battle for control.

The teaser doesn't reveal much footage, but it gives us an early taste of the brutal father-son rivalry at the center of the story. With Cage and Skarsgård going head-to-head as competing arms dealers, there's plenty of potential for some wonderfully twisted family drama.

Niccol is also returning to write and direct the sequel. His filmography includes Gattaca, S1m0ne, In Time, The Host, Good Kill, Anon, and I, Object. Having the original filmmaker back should help maintain the dark humor and cynical perspective that made the first movie so memorable.

The original Lord of War took inspiration in part from the exploits of real-life international arms trafficker Viktor Bout, using Yuri's criminal career to explore the ugly realities of the global weapons trade. The sequel looks to continue examining that world, this time through two generations of ruthless businessmen willing to profit from war.

Joining Cage and Skarsgård are Sylvia Hoeks, Laura Harrier, Georgina Beedle, Greg Tarzan Davis, Rafael Morais, and Max Kraus.

I'm curious to see how this one turns out. The original Lord of War was a great mix of dark comedy, crime, and political commentary, with Cage delivering one of his more memorable performances. Bringing Yuri back and forcing him to compete with a son who might be even more dangerous than he is sounds like a fun direction for the sequel.

The teaser is brief, but I'm already interested in watching these two characters tear each other's worlds apart. Hopefully, Niccol delivers another viciously entertaining crime thriller with the same sharp sense of humor as the original.

Lords of War hasn't premiered at any film festivals yet, but Vertical has scheduled the film to hit U.S. theaters on January 22, 2027.
