NOVA Movie Officially Moving Forward as LOKI Creator Michael Waldron Writing the Script

Marvel Studios has finally given fans a real update on one of the MCU's most requested cosmic heroes, and it's a pretty exciting one. After years of rumors, shifting plans, and mixed reports, the long-awaited Nova project is officially moving ahead, and it's headed to the big screen.

Recent rumors claimed that Michael Waldron had joined Marvel's Nova series, but those reports were quickly dismissed. As it turns out, they were only half wrong.

According to Deadline, Waldron has officially signed on to write Nova, but instead of a Disney+ series, Marvel Studios is developing it as a feature film.

That's a pretty significant shift for a project that's been bouncing between television and film for the past few years. Marvel first confirmed that Nova was in development back in 2022, but there has been plenty of uncertainty over exactly what form it would take.

At one point, Sabir Pirzada was reportedly writing a streaming series, but that version ultimately didn't move forward. Deadline reports that Waldron has now been brought in to develop a completely new pitch for the movie.

Waldron is already deeply involved in Marvel's biggest upcoming projects. He previously wrote Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and served as showrunner on Loki.

He's also working on Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, making him one of Marvel Studios' key creative voices moving into the next phase of the MCU.

As for Nova itself, it's still in the earliest stages of development. There aren't any official story details yet, and it's unclear whether ideas from the previous television version will carry over into the movie.

Earlier reports suggested that Annihilus would serve as the series' main villain, while both Richard Rider and Sam Alexander were expected to appear. Whether any of those plans survive the transition to film remains to be seen, and Marvel could easily decide to take the story in an entirely new direction.

The Nova Corps was introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy, and many fans expected Richard Rider to eventually emerge from that corner of the universe. That never happened during James Gunn's time with the franchise, but Marvel has already laid the groundwork for Nova's arrival.

Thanos wiped out most of the Nova Corps before the events of Avengers: Infinity War, leaving plenty of room for a story centered on rebuilding the legendary intergalactic peacekeeping force or following one of its last surviving members.

One interesting piece of trivia is that Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios' Head of Streaming, Television and Animation, previously described the now-shelved television version as an "amazing ensemble piece with a great cast of characters."

He also said the show would have "shades of" both Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica. Whether any of those concepts influence the film remains anyone's guess, but they certainly hinted at the kind of large-scale cosmic adventure Marvel had in mind.

If Marvel introduces Sam Alexander alongside Richard Rider, it would also bring one of the publisher's newer heroes into the MCU. Sam made his debut in Marvel Point One in 2011 before launching into his own series in 2013.

The Arizona teenager inherited the Nova helmet from his missing father and eventually embraced the role after training with Guardians of the Galaxy members Gamora and Rocket.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has also been teasing Nova's arrival for years. Speaking back in 2021, he explained why fans had been waiting so long, saying:

"Timing is relative, right? I think I'd been talking about Doctor Strange eight years before that movie came out. So, 'immediate potential' is relative. But clearly, we are not shying away from the cosmic end of storytelling right in the sweet spot of the Nova Corps and Nova himself."

It's still going to be a while before Nova blasts into theaters, but after years of uncertainty, the project finally has real momentum.

With Waldron developing the screenplay and Marvel giving the character a theatrical debut instead of a streaming series, it'll be interesting to see how one of Marvel's most powerful cosmic heroes fits into the MCU's next chapter.

Fans have been waiting a long time for Nova to suit up, and it looks like that wait may finally be paying off.
