OBLIVION Director Joseph Kosinski is the Frontrunner to Helm TOP GUN 2
Now that Tom Cruise has made the Top Gun sequel official by announcing it on television, the gears are beginning to spin. Sources close to the project tell Variety that Joseph Kosinski — who worked on Tron: Legacy and also worked with Cruise when directing Oblivion — is at the top of the list to direct Top Gun 2. No official offers have been made but sources say Kosinski will likely be the guy.
The sequel will be set in a world of drone technology and high-tech fighters and go into detail about the end of dogfighting era which the original film focused on. Not much else is known about the plot but last year Val Kilmer announced he was asked to come back to reprise the role of Iceman keeping his promise to always have Maverick's back.

What do you guys think of the director choice? Cruise is known for re-teaming with directors he has liked in the past. And Oblivion is a pretty awesome film, but with such a gap in time between 1986's Top Gun it will be challenging to make a followup that feels like its part of the Top Gun family.
