OBSESSION Star Teases Curry Barker's Next Horror Movie: "It's Like if Key and Peele Walked Into Hereditary"
After completely shaking up the horror scene with Obsession, Curry Barker isn't slowing down. While fans are still watching his breakout hit smash box office records, the filmmaker already has multiple projects lined up.
One of those is Anything but Ghosts, and based on what one of its stars has to say, horror fans should expect something completely different from Barker's first feature.
Cooper Tomlinson, who starred in Obsession and reunites with Barker for Anything but Ghosts, recently shared some new details about the upcoming film during an appearance on the Raiders of the Lost Podcast. While the movie may exist in the same universe as Obsession, don't expect the same kind of experience.
Tomlinson explained: “The movie’s like if Key and Peele walked into Hereditary. It’s a buddy comedy about these two guys, and it turns really scary."
Mixing comedy with genuinely unsettling horror has worked incredibly well in recent years, and Barker seems ready to put his own spin on the formula.
Tomlinson went on to explain the story, saying: "It's about these con artist ghost hunters who encounter real ghosts. Then they have to step up and be the thing that they promised this family.”
The premise follows Barker and Tomlinson as a pair of fake paranormal investigators whose scam comes crashing down when they find themselves dealing with actual supernatural forces. It sounds like the movie will lean into the comedy early before taking a much darker turn.
The film also features an impressive cast that includes Bryce Dallas Howard and Aaron Paul. Of course, Barker has plenty keeping him busy beyond this movie.
Following the incredible success of Obsession, the filmmaker recently signed a multi-million dollar deal with Universal to develop his third feature. He's also been talking about his vision for a fresh take on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Barker previously talked about The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, saying: "I want to do something that's different, but not stray too far from what we know. There's some really messed-up stuff happening at that farm. It's untapped."
It'll be interesting to see what Barker brings to one of horror's most iconic properties. Meanwhile, Obsession continues to do something few original horror movies ever accomplish.
Even after its digital release, the film keeps pulling in audiences around the world. At the time of writing, it has earned more than $370 million worldwide, surpassing Sinners to become the highest-grossing original live-action movie of the decade so far.
If Anything but Ghosts delivers on Tomlinson's description, Barker could have another horror hit on his hands. A supernatural buddy comedy that slowly descends into terrifying territory sounds like a fun recipe, especially coming from a filmmaker who has already shown he knows how to surprise audiences.
