OBSESSSION Star Michael Johnston Joining Brendan Fraser in Universal's Next THE MUMMY Adventure

Universal’s next trip into the world of The Mummy might have found another addition to its cast. Michael Johnston, who recently turned heads with his performance in Curry Barker’s Obsession, is reportedly in early talks to join the upcoming revival of the legendary action-adventure franchise.

According to Deadline, Johnston is being eyed for a role in the film, although details about the character he could play are still being kept under wraps.

If the deal comes together, he’ll share the screen with returning franchise favorites Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, marking a reunion that fans have been hoping to see for years. Universal Pictures declined to comment on the reported casting.

The new Mummy movie is being directed by the filmmaking collective Radio Silence, with David Coggeshall (The Family Plan, Orphan: First Kill) writing the screenplay.

This project also brings Radio Silence and Project X Entertainment back together after their successful collaboration on the recent Scream films. While Radio Silence stepped away before Scream 7, Project X remained involved with producing that installment.

For longtime fans, the biggest draw is easily the return of Fraser and Weisz. The pair first starred together in The Mummy (1999) and later reunited for The Mummy Returns (2001), both directed by Stephen Sommers.

Those films reintroduced Universal’s classic movie monster to a new generation, blending horror, action, adventure, and comedy into blockbuster hits that each earned more than $400 million worldwide.

Fraser played the wisecracking adventurer Rick O’Connell, while Weisz portrayed Evelyn Carnahan, a brilliant Egyptologist working at the Cairo Museum of Antiquities.

Their journey took them from uneasy allies to husband and wife as they battled the resurrected high priest Imhotep and other ancient supernatural threats.

By the end of The Mummy Returns, Evelyn had discovered she was the reincarnation of an Egyptian princess, died during the battle, and was ultimately brought back to life by Rick.

The popularity of those movies reached far beyond theaters. They helped turn Fraser into one of Hollywood’s biggest stars during the late 1990s and early 2000s, inspired beloved Universal theme park attractions in Hollywood, Orlando, and Singapore, and expanded into additional films.

That included The Scorpion King, led by Dwayne Johnson, followed by The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008, which saw Fraser return while Weisz sat out the sequel.

Universal later tried to reinvent the franchise with 2017’s The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise, as the launchpad for the studio’s planned Dark Universe. Although the film collected $409 million worldwide, negative reviews ultimately derailed those larger ambitions, and the shared monster universe was shelved.

Now, Universal is giving The Mummy another shot with Fraser and Weisz back in the fold, and that's already enough to get fans excited. Adding Johnston to the mix would be another interesting move, especially after his standout work in Obsession.

While we’ll have to wait to learn who he could be playing, it certainly feels like this new chapter is putting together a cast that blends familiar faces with rising talent.

If Johnston officially signs on, it’ll be fun to see what role he plays in the franchise’s next supernatural adventure.
