ONE PIECE Creator Eiichiro Oda Already Knows Where the Netflix Live-Action Series Will End
Netflix is about to set sail again with the return of One Piece, and the anticipation for Season 2 is through the roof. The live-action adaptation surprised a lot of fans when it debuted, successfully bringing Eiichiro Oda’s beloved manga and anime to life in a way that actually worked.
Now, as the next chapter of the series arrives, a big question has been hanging in the air. With a story this massive, how far could the show realistically go?
Well, it turns out Oda already has an answer.
One Piece has been running in the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump for nearly 30 years and the story still hasn’t reached its finish line. Because of that, fans have long wondered how Netflix could possibly adapt such a huge saga without running into the same problem. But according to the actor who plays Roronoa Zoro, the plan has already been mapped out.
Mackenyu, who portrays Zoro in the series, recently spoke with The Movie Podcast and revealed that Oda has already decided how far the live-action series should travel through the story.
“He has a vision to where he wants to end. Not end, but where he wants us to take the live-action to. And we all know about it. We know where he wants to go up to. That hyped me up a lot. There’s a specific arc he wants us to go up to.”
Mackenyu obviously kept the details to himself. Still, knowing that Oda has a clear destination for the live-action adaptation should be reassuring for viewers who worry about the show wandering without a plan.
Finding a natural ending point was always going to be tricky for One Piece. The original manga hasn’t wrapped up yet, and many of its biggest mysteries remain under lock and key.
The live-action series was always going to need its own finish line at some point. Whether that came from Netflix pulling the plug early or the creators choosing the right arc to close things out, an ending was inevitable, and Oda himself has already picked the spot.
Season 2 of One Piece, officially titled One Piece: Into the Grand Line, premieres on Netflix on March 10. The new season will adapt several major arcs from the manga including Loguetown, Reverse Mountain, Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, and Drum Island.
That storyline pushes the Straw Hats deeper into the Grand Line and introduces a lot of key characters and world-building.
The adventure doesn’t stop there as a third season is already in production, and Oda previously confirmed that it will conclude the Alabasta saga, which is one of the most beloved arcs in the series.
But the destination Mackenyu teased likely goes beyond that.
Once the story moves past Alabasta, the world of One Piece opens up even more with bigger conflicts, new allies, and massive threats across the Grand Line. If Netflix continues investing in the show for several more seasons, it could cover a significant chunk of that journey.
Still, there’s a good chance the live-action series could wrap up before reaching the famous time skip era of the original story. That moment in the manga shifts the scale of the adventure and launches the Straw Hats into the final stages of the hunt for the legendary treasure.
Stopping somewhere before that era might actually make sense for the adaptation. It would allow the show to build toward a satisfying climax while still celebrating some of the biggest arcs in Oda’s story.
For now, fans can look forward to seeing the Straw Hats back in action as One Piece continues its live-action voyage on Netflix.
