ONE PIECE Producers Have Hopes For 12 Seasons, But They "Easily" Have Six Seasons in Them

As audiences continue to enjoy the awesome live-action One Piece series, executive producers, Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements, are talking about the show and its future.

Before the series was released there were a lot of skeptical fans of the anime and manga that didn’t think the creative team would be able to pull this off, but they did! The show surprised a lot of people and even the naysayers have embraced it and talk about how great it is.

With the show being such a huge success there’s no doubt that Netflix is going to want more, but right now things are in a weird place with the writers’ and actors’ strikes, so it’s something they couldn’t move forward with right now even if they wanted to.

During a recent interview with Deadline, Adelstein was asked about hopes for a Season 2 renewal, and he responded, saying: “We have hopes for 12 seasons, there’s so much material.” It would be pretty awesome to get 12 seasons and it’s certainly possible with everything in the source material! A more realistic expectation would be six seasons, though. Clements added:

“We’re over 1,080 chapters at this point in the manga.. We have plans with Matt Owens for how we would break multiple seasons, and I think even if we did six seasons, we would probably only use up half of the chapters of the manga. It really could go on and on and on.”

Clements was then asked if they have at least six seasons in them, and she said, “Oh yeah, easy. (laughs.)” She went on to talk about the path of any upcoming seasons, saying:

“Everything we do is in concert with Netflix, [manga publisher] Shueisha and Oda-san, they are a part of that conversation. We’ve definitely had more thorough conversations about what we would do with Season 2 should we have the opportunity, and then less extensive conversations about where we would go for season three to six. The one thing I would say, we’re all unified in the parts of the manga that you just absolutely cannot eliminate, and that’s our guiding principle, the stories that we know and the characters that we know are important to the fans. So that really is the start in breaking future seasons. It will require a lot of conversations, but we feel lucky to have have the roadmap.”

I would just love for this creative team to tell a full and complete story with these characters! I know the stories are endless, but we know that this series won’t go on forever, so I just hope the have a plan to bring their story to and end so that fans aren’t left hanging when the show does end.

One Piece follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) and his pirate crew as they explore a fantastical world of endless oceans and exotic islands in search of the world’s ultimate treasure known as “One Piece” to become the next Pirate King. Steven Maeda is a co-writer, showrunner, and executive producer on the series along with Matt Owens, who is also co-writing and executive producing. The series also stars Morgan Davies (The Evil Dead) as Koby, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino (The Sex Lives of College Girls) as Alvida, Aidan Scott (Action Point) as Helmeppo, Jeff Ward (Hacks) as Buggy, McKinley Belcher III (Ozark) as Arlong, and Vincent Regan (Troy) as Garp.
