Oscar Isaac Says Filming Guillermo del Toro’s FRANKENSTEIN Was “The Most Fun” He’s Ever Had

It’s not often that you hear someone describe Frankenstein as fun, but leave it to Oscar Isaac and Guillermo del Toro to turn Gothic horror into a joyful creative playground.

The upcoming adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated films of the year, and according to Isaac, making it was an absolute blast.

“It was the most f*cking fun I’ve ever had in my life. Running around in the rain, up and down steps, this Christ-like thing on a crucifix and Guillermo in the corner, screaming!

“It was hard to fathom that it was actually happening. It’s such dark material, but was approached with so much joy. Like 14 year olds had keys to the kingdom – it had that kind of energy to it.”

That mix of darkness and exuberance sounds like classic del Toro, embracing the macabre while finding beauty and emotion within it. Isaac, who plays Victor Frankenstein, explained that this version of the story isn’t the typical “mad scientist” tale we’ve seen before.

“[Guillermo] was much more interested in the emotional underpinnings of what the character means to him than the stuff we’ve seen, which I guess is ‘scientist gone mad.’

“There’s elements of that, but we approach it more as an artist. And really this idea of generational abuse and trauma that gets passed down, and how he continues to pass that down towards his creation. And ultimately the reckoning that happens because of that.”

It sounds like del Toro’s Frankenstein will be a deeply emotional and visually stunning exploration of pain, creation, and humanity, which is something only he could pull off.

If Isaac’s experience on set is any indication, the film may balance that emotional weight with an unexpected sense of joy and creative freedom.

Frankenstein releases in select theaters on October 17 and begins streaming on Netflix on November 7.
