Oscar Isaac Says MOON KNIGHT Is "F***ing Nutty" and the "First Legitimate Marvel Character Study Since IRON MAN"

Marvel’s upcoming series Moon Knight is shaping up to be a huge hit for Marvel when it finally drops on Disney+. Oscar Isaac stars in the series, and in it, he plays a very interesting character who has multiple personalities.

Isaac plays Steven Grant, “a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, who becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life. Steven discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc’s enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt.”

When talking with Empire magazine about the series, Isaac said that the series is “the first legitimate Marvel character-study since Iron Man” and that it’s “fucking nutty.” He said:

“Often on these big movies it can feel like you’re building the plane on the runway. The idea of getting back to ‘handmade’ films, character studies… I was desperate for that feeling. [‘Moon Knight’] felt handmade. And it’s the first legitimate Marvel character-study since ‘Iron Man.’ I thought, ‘Maybe I can hijack this thing. Maybe this is the chance to do something really fucking nutty on a major stage.’”

That’s what I love the hear! That’s what I was hoping for from this series, and I’ve been enjoying the footage that I’ve seen in the trailer. This show looks like it’s going to deliver fans a wild and different kind of Marvel story! The actor went on to talk about playing a character with dissociative identity disorder, which manifests in several distinct personas with defined personalities:

“What I love most about this thing is that it’s an exploration of a mind that doesn’t know itself. A human being that doesn’t know his own brain. I found that really moving: what the mind is capable of as far as survival. But the workload was massive: the technical challenge of embodying these different characters, physically, the way I manifest my body… It required a lot of energy.”

When previously talking about the series, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said:

"He's brutal, It's been fun to work with Disney+ and see the boundaries shifting on what we're able to do. There are moments [in the series] when Moon Knight is wailing on another character, and it is loud and brutal, and the knee-jerk reaction is, 'We're gonna pull back on this, right?' No. We're not pulling back. There's a tonal shift. This is a different thing. This is Moon Knight."

The series also stars Ethan Hawke as the main villain, a cult leader named Arthur Harrow. Moon Knight was created by Doug Moench and Don Perlin and appeared in the August 1975 issue Werewolf by Night #32. Jeremy Slater (The Umbrella Academy) and Beau DeMayo (The Originals and The Witcher) writing the series. Mohamed Diab, Justin Benson, and Aaron Moorhead are directing.

Moon Knight will be released on March 30th. In case you missed it, you can check out the recently released Super Bowl spot for the show here.
