PARASITE Director Bong Joon-ho Wants to Make a Different Kind of Musical

After winning big at the Oscars this year for his film Parasite, director Bong Joon-ho can pretty much make whatever he wants. I’m sure he’s got offers to direct projects coming in form all over the place. The big question is, what will he do next?

He’s currently developing a series version of Parasite for HBO with Adam McKay, but as far as his next film project goes, he previously mentioned two projects that he’s been developing:

“I am preparing two different projects. One is a Korean-language one, and the other one is an English-language one. Both projects are not big films. They’re the size of ‘Parasite’ or “Mother.” The Korean film is located in Seoul and has unique elements of horror and action. It’s difficult to define the genre of my films. The English project is a drama film based on a true event that happened in 2016. Of course I won’t know until I finish the script, but it has to be set half in the U.K. and half in the U.S.”

He’s added another possible project into the mix. While talking to Empire, Bong explained that he would love to make a musical and that it would be different:

“I would love to make a musical. Characters would begin singing, then think, ‘Oh my God, fuck this, this is too cheesy,’ and stop suddenly. There are amazing musical films, like Singin’ In The Rain. But when I watch them, I feel very embarrassed and start blushing. So it would have to be… different.”

I would love to see what Bong Joon-ho’s vision for a musical would be! There’s no doubt that he would do something completely wild and unique with it and I kind of hope that he does it because I want to see what his “different” take on musicals would be.

What do you think about Joon-ho wanted to develop a musical? What do you think his vision wold be for it?
