Patty Jenkins Says Her STAR WARS: ROGUE SQUADRON Film Is in "Active Development"

Director Patty Jenkins has offered an update on Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, which ended up being delayed over a year ago. Not long after that, it was reported that Jenkins was frustrated with Lucasfilm’s micromanagement, and we haven’t really had any update on the project since!

Well, Jenkins has offered an update on this project saying that it’s currently in active development but has yet to be given the official green light. She said:

“I originally left Rogue Squadron after a long and productive development process when it became clear it couldn’t happen soon enough and I did not want to delay WW3 any further. When I did, Lucasfilm asked me to consider coming back to RS after WW3, which I was honored to do, so I agreed. They made a new deal with me. In fact, I am still on it and that project has been in active development ever since. I don’t know if it will happen or not. We never do until the development process is complete, but I look forward to its potential ahead.”

So, there’s still a chance that Rogue Squadron could happen. I would normally have been excited about this update, but after Wonder Woman 1984, I’m not so sure. But, if it does get made, I just hope for the best! When previously talking about the movie, Jenkins said:

“The Michael Stackpole books and the video games and all of the Rogue Squadron books, there's an incredible history that's really important to honor. And yet, it must be brought to a new age, because we have to tell a new story with it and so you're trying to blend the best of everything and make it the great fighter-pilot movie, which I've always wanted to make, as well. It's a big brew of things that you're trying to put together and still try to keep a simple story."

The movie will tell an original story that is heavily inspired by the games and the books. When talking about the pressure of making a Star Wars film, she went on to say:

"You're trying to bring the best of yourself and use it to make something beautiful that honors the legacy before you. Of course, it's a huge amount of pressure and Wonder Woman was a huge amount of pressure, as well, so it's not a totally new feeling to me. Definitely nerve-wracking."

There are several Star Wars projects in development right now; Lucasfilm has been developing new Star Wars films since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released, but they still have yet to put one into production. It’s crazy! But, they’ve had some great shows like The Mandalorian and Andor to keep the fans happy in the meantime.
