Peacock Greenlights TWISTED METAL Season 3 with THE BOYS Writer Set as Showrunner
Peacock is keeping the engines roaring. The streamer has officially renewed Twisted Metal for a third season, and there is a creative leadership shakeup behind the scenes, and it sets the stage for an interesting new direction.
The renewal comes after a huge performance boost. Season 2 became Peacock’s second most watched sophomore season across all its originals, which makes this continuation feel like a natural move. Anthony Mackie will also return for the next season.
The bigger surprise is that co-creator and showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith is stepping away, and David Reed will be taking over moving forward.
Reed’s writing credits include The Boys and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, two shows that know how to blend character driven storytelling with explosive moments. The Boys in particular matches the frantic and unhinged energy fans expect from Twisted Metal, where anything can become a weapon and no idea is too outrageous.
Season 2 finally delivered something longtime fans have been waiting for. The series brought the iconic tournament to life, showcasing tricked out death machines, off the wall drivers, and badass clashes. It captured the spirit of the games in a way that fans seemed to love.
One of those fans is the show’s outgoing creative lead. Smith shared "I grew up playing the Twisted Metal games in heated matches against my siblings and my friends, so it's got a special place in my heart.
“The addition of the actual tournament to the series is exactly what I've been wanting to see for years, and now I'm also excited to see what season 3 will have in store."
His passion for the franchise helped shape the series into one of Peacock’s most successful genre shows so far. With Reed stepping in, Season 3 is set to carry that momentum into something new while still honoring what fans already love.
Peacock hasn’t announced a release window yet for Twisted Metal Season 3, but with this creative shift and the show’s growing audience, there’s plenty to look forward to.
