Pedro Pascal Says He Learned About THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU the Same Way Fans Did

When Pedro Pascal signed on to play Din Djarin in The Mandalorian, the role quickly turned into one of the most beloved characters in modern Star Wars. So when The Mandalorian and Grogu was officially announced in January 2024, fans were excited to see the Disney+ story make the jump to the big screen.

What makes the announcement even more amusing is that Pascal himself had no idea it was happening.

During a recent interview with Empire magazine, the actor shared that he had heard a few rumblings about a possible theatrical project, but he assumed it was just speculation floating around the industry. The moment the news became official, he found out the same way the rest of us did… on social media.

"I suppose I mistook the information," Pascal laughed. "I can only interpret that as me managing my expectations."

That unexpected reveal set the stage for the next chapter in Din Djarin’s journey, which brings the armored bounty hunter and his tiny Force-sensitive companion back together for a new adventure set after the fall of the Empire.

In the film, Din and Grogu team up with the New Republic as they confront remnants of the Imperial forces scattered across the galaxy.

The movie also expands the franchise with some intriguing additions to the cast. Sigourney Weaver joins the project in an undisclosed role, while Jeremy Allen White and Martin Scorsese lend their voices to characters that will inhabit this corner of the galaxy.

One of the biggest character shifts involves Din Djarin himself. The Mandalorian creed has long defined his identity, especially the rule about never removing his helmet in front of others. That tradition, however, will be challenged in the film.

Pascal revealed that when Jon Favreau explained the moment where Din removes his helmet, it landed exactly the way he hoped it would.

"When we got to that part, all I can say is that it made perfect sense, and it was what I was hoping would be the reason. If I were to pitch something, I would say, 'The only thing that makes sense is...' And that's exactly it. He filled that blank. I said immediately, 'Jon, that's exactly what I was hoping to hear!'"

Fans shouldn’t expect Grogu to suddenly start chatting, though. According to former Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy, the little Force wielder will remain silent for now. That said, the dynamic between Din and Grogu continues to be the emotional core of the story.

With Favreau directing, The Mandalorian and Grogu represents a major step for the franchise. It’s the first theatrical Star Wars movie since The Rise of Skywalker, and it’s bringing one of the saga’s most popular duos along for the ride.

Whether Pascal knew about it or not, the galaxy far, far away is heading back to theaters when The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives on May 22.
