Peter Jackson Turned Down The Opportunity to Direct DC's AQUAMAN Twice
Ever since Peter Jackson directed The Lord of the Rings trilogy, he hasn’t really been able to make anything quite as good since. The best thing that he has directed since then was the documentary They Shall Not Grow Old.
As a long time fan of Jackson, even before he made Lord of the Rings, I’ve been rooting for him to make something truly great again. It’s not like the guy doesn’t know how to make a great movie! We’ve seen him do it before!
Remember about a year ago when Jackson was rumored to be up for directing a DC movie for Warner Bros.? Well, it turns out the studio did actually want him to direct a DC movie at one point. While talking to Empire, the filmmaker revealed that he turned down the opportunity to direct Aquaman… twice.
He revealed that the offers came from former Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara. Here’s the story:
“He said, ‘Are you a fan of Aquaman?’ I said, ‘No.’ Six months later: ‘Peter, are you a fan of Aquaman?’ I said, ’No, Kevin, I already told you this’. I’m not a superhero guy. I read Tintin… Look, films are hard. I only want to make something that I have a deep passion for.”
I’m actually kinda glad Jackson direct direct Aquaman. I’m ultimately satisfied with how James Wan handled it, and I’m not sure Jackson would have been able to do any better with the material.
As of right now, Jackson has set out on a journey to direct a doc about The Beatles, so he seems content with working on documentaries at the moment. In fact, he told the outlet that he doesn’t “really anticipate making another theatrical film for a year or two.”
