Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter has announced that they are developing two new animated films coming in 2022, and announced that one of them is a coming of age comedy titled Turning Red.

Turning Red centers on a character named Mei Lee, described as “a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which for a teenager is practically ALWAYS), she ‘poofs’ into a giant red panda!”

Turning Red is being directed by Academy Award winner Domee Shi, who helmed that wonderful Pixar short film Bao. She also worked as a storyboard artist on films such as Inside out, The Good Dinosaur, Incredibles 2, and Toy Story 4.

The film is being produced by Lindsey Collins, whose previous credits include co-producing the beloved 2008 sci-fi pic WALL-E, producing John Carter and Finding Dory, as well as a number of shorts at Pixar.

Turning Red is currently slated to hit theaters on March 11, 2022. The other film Pixar is releasing is Chris EvansBuzz Lightyear origin story movie slated for that summer.
