POKÉMON: WILD CARD Trailer Teases a Card-Battling Adventure Coming in 2027
It’s been six years since we had a new animated Pokémon movie, but the drought is finally coming to an end. The franchise is heading back to the big screen in 2027 with Pokémon: Wild Card, and this one is trading traditional Pokémon battles for something a little different with cards.
The first teaser for the movie debuted during the Pokémon World Championship, offering a quick introduction to its central duo.
We see a Mimikyu, the creepy-cute Ghost-type Pokémon that disguises itself beneath a ragged Pikachu costume, along with a young card game player wearing a Mimikyu-inspired hoodie.
According to the official synopsis, the two are partners with ambitions of becoming the best, except their road to the top involves competitive card games rather than Pokémon battles.
That gives Pokémon: Wild Card a different identity from the franchise’s previous animated movies. Those films traditionally followed Ash, Pikachu, and their companions on various adventures. This time, the Pokémon Trading Card Game appears to be taking center stage.
The movie also has some impressive animation talent involved. Pokémon: Wild Card is being directed by Katsuhiko Kitada, who worked on The First Slam Dunk, while Akemi Hayashi, whose credits include Banana Fish, is handling the character designs.
CloverWorks is producing the film. The animation studio is known for projects including Spy x Family and is also working on the upcoming Neon Genesis Evangelion anime.
Pokémon: Wild Card is expected to arrive sometime in 2027, which is shaping up to be a massive year for Pokémon fans.
The franchise will also launch Pokémon Winds and Waves, the first Gen 10 games in the series, while Disney+ is getting Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d and Pichu, a claymation series from Aardman.
Wild Card is especially interesting because it’s taking the animated movies into territory they haven’t really explored before, and that could make this return to the big screen a lot of fun.
