PRIMAL Creator Genndy Tartakovsky Talks About the State of Adult Animation
Samurai Jack and Primal creator Genndy Tartakovsky seems to be enjoying the adult-themed animated projects that he’s been able to work over the past few years. It’s been interesting and cool to see how adult animated shows are more common these days. In a recent interview with Animation Magazine, Tartakovsky addressed the state of adult animation, saying:
"It seems like right now we're having a very good moment for adult animation, especially in Europe. I think it's really starting to break away from The Simpsons/Family Guy mold. Back when I was 18, my friends and I were hoping for more adult animated projects and now I feel that we are finally seeing the fruition of all those dreams. We are seeing this growth and move forward in that artistic direction."
Honestly, I think anime helped pave the way for this new boom of adult animated projects that we’re seeing. Anime has always been more adult-themed, and it’s more popular than ever in the U.S. Now we are seeing shows being developed in the U.S. that are trying to emulate that, and it’s spilling into all kinds of different animation styles.
Some of the projects that Tartakovsky is currently working on include Primal, Unicorn: Eternal Warrior, as well as a new R-rated raunchy animated film titled Fixed, which is about a dog who finds out he's gonna get neutered in the morning, and what he does with his next 24 hours.
Have you been enjoying the wave of adult animated projects that are being developed?
