PROJECT HAIL MARY Author Andy Weir Talks Sequel Possibilities as Ryan Gosling’s Film Approaches

The upcoming film adaptation of Project Hail Mary already has sci-fi fans counting the days until Ryan Gosling launches into space on the big screen.

While the movie hasn’t even arrived in theaters yet, some readers are already wondering what comes next for the story. Could there eventually be a sequel?

According to the novel’s creator, Andy Weir, the answer is still very much up in the air. Weir recently spoke with ScreenRant and revealed that his immediate focus isn’t returning to the world of Project Hail Mary.

Instead, the author is pouring his energy into writing an entirely new science-fiction novel. Details about the book are being kept under wraps for now, but Weir confirmed it will remain firmly rooted in the genre that fans know him for. The story will also stand on its own rather than connecting to any of his previous work.

Naturally, the conversation eventually turned to the possibility of a sequel to Project Hail Mary. While the idea has crossed his mind many times, Weir explained that he hasn’t found the right story yet. Readers frequently ask about continuing the adventure, but he says the pieces simply haven’t come together.

He said: “I know, I know, and many have pointed that out, but I don’t feel like I have anything strong enough to run with yet… Hopefully, in time, I’ve got bits and pieces of good ideas for sequels, but not enough to run with. If I’m going to sequel it, I want it to be good.”

So while a second novel isn’t currently on the horizon, Weir hasn’t completely ruled it out either. If he eventually cracks the right concept, that follow-up book could easily become the foundation for another film.

Hollywood tends to wait for the source material, meaning a sequel novel would likely open the door for a second movie as well, especially if the upcoming adaptation proves to be a hit.

The original Project Hail Mary novel already carries a strong reputation among science-fiction readers. It followed the success of Weir’s earlier book The Martian, which famously made the leap to the big screen starring Matt Damon and became one of the most beloved modern sci-fi films.

Now the spotlight shifts to Gosling’s upcoming Project Hail Mary movie. If the film lands with audiences the way the book did with readers, fans may end up hoping even more that Weir eventually finds that sequel idea worth exploring.
