Quentin Tarantino Will Never Direct a Marvel or DC Movie Because He's "Not a Hired Hand"
I never expected Quentin Tarantino to join Marvel Studios or DC Studios and direct one of their comic book movies. He’s just not that kind of filmmaker. But, for those of you wondering if that was ever a possibility, he has confirmed that’s not in the cards for him because he’s not a “hired hand.”
In his book, Cinema Speculation, he talks about the '60s anti-establishment auteurs rejoicing when studio musical adaptations fell out of favor and went on to say that today’s filmmakers "can’t wait for the day they can say that about superhero movies."
During a recent interview with the LA Times, Tarantino was asked with that day might come and he said: "The analogy works because it’s a similar chokehold. The writing’s not quite on the wall yet the way it was in 1969 when it was, 'Oh, my God, we just put a bunch of money into things that nobody gives a damn about anymore.'"
In regards to if he would ever direct a superhero movie, he said: “You have to be a hired hand to do those things. I’m not a hired hand. I’m not looking for a job."
Now, at one point in his career, Tarantino did want to make a Luke Cage movie with Lawrence Fishburn. But, that was right after Reservoir Dogs during a time when he was an up-and-coming filmmaker and before superhero movies became as popular as they are. I think he would have made a badass Luke Cage movie!
The director has said several times over the years that he would retire after directing 10 movies, and if he actually sticks to that, he’s got one film left! What will it be!? It’s not going to be a superhero film!
What do you think about his comments about Marvel and DC directors being hired hands?
