Report Claims Two Avengers Could Be the Key Players Driving AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Story
Marvel Studios is still keeping most of Avengers: Doomsday details locked away, but a new rumor may have offered fans a better idea of who will be carrying the story when Earth's Mightiest Heroes return to the big screen.
While Marvel has yet to release a full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, the studio has been slowly teasing the film through character-focused promotional material. Now, a fresh report suggests that two familiar heroes may end up playing much larger roles than some fans expected.
According to scooper MyTimeToShineHello on X, both Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson and Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova are expected to be major driving forces in the film's narrative. As always with scooper reports, fans should treat the information as rumor until Marvel officially confirms anything.
The first claim centered on Sam Wilson, with MTTSH posting: “Sam will have a decent role in Avengers Doomsday!”
That shouldn't come as a huge surprise. Sam is now carrying the mantle of Captain America after Steve Rogers handed him the shield at the end of Avengers: Endgame.
As the current leader of the Avengers, it makes sense that he'd be heavily involved in whatever multiversal chaos is heading toward Earth.
What makes the situation even more interesting is that Chris Evans is also returning. Marvel hasn't revealed exactly how Evans fits into the story, but the possibility of Sam Wilson sharing screen time again with Steve Rogers will be interesting to see.
The second rumor may be the one that catches more people off guard. MTTSH claimed: “Yelena is the female hero with the biggest role in Avengers Doomsday.”
If true, that would place Yelena near the center of one of Marvel's biggest crossover events ever. Marvel hasn't revealed how Yelena factors into the plot, but audiences last saw her in the post-credits scene of Thunderbolts.
I have to point out that niether of these characters were included in any of the teaser trailers that were released.
During that scene, Yelena and the newly formed New Avengers learned that an extradimensional spacecraft was approaching Earth. That ship was later revealed to be the Fantastic Four's Excelsior, setting up a major connection between Marvel's First Family and the events leading into Doomsday.
The rumor has sparked a variety of reactions online. Some fans are fully on board with Sam Wilson taking on a larger leadership role, while others feel the character still needs more development before becoming one of the franchise's central figures.
Yelena's reported prominence has also generated debate, especially among fans who assumed Vanessa Kirby's Sue Storm would emerge as the film's primary female lead.
At this point, Marvel is keeping its cards close to the chest, so there's no way to know how accurate these reports are. But if Sam Wilson and Yelena Belova truly end up leading the charge, it would mark a significant shift toward Marvel's next generation of heroes as the franchise moves deeper into the Multiverse Saga.
Directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo from a script by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, Avengers: Doomsday features an enormous ensemble cast that includes Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
We'll find out exactly how these heroes fit into the story when Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026.
