Review: M3GAN Is a Playful Horror Movie That Delivers Creepiness and Laughs
Producers James Wan and Jason Blum, the modern masters of horror, have delivered another great horror movie with M3GAN. The movie is a techno-horror thriller that centers on an A.I. robot doll that becomes self-aware and starts killing people. I liked the footage that was shared in the trailers, but I still wasn’t sure what to expect from the movie, and the big surprise for me was the amount of humor that was integrated into the story!
The film was filled with moments that had me and the rest of the audience laughing hysterically throughout the movie. There were so many funny moments sprinkled throughout the movie, but it also delivered the fun and playful creepiness that is teased in the trailer. That whole weird dance sequence that is highlighted in the trailers that everyone is talking about? That’s one of the most least interesting moments in the movie. So if you enjoyed that, just wait and see what else is in store!
The film is directed by Gerard Johnstone, who directed the Australian horror movie Housebound, and the script comes from Akela Cooper (Malignant, The Nun 2). This creative team did such a fantastic job bring this story to life, and it’s unlike any other killer doll movie that you’ve seen before. M3GAN very much has a unique flare to it that I think is going to win audiences over.
There are still a lot of naysayers out there that weren’t sold on the trailer, but I have a feeling that everyone is going to be talking about how good this movie is. There’s going to be a flood of word-of-mouth hype, and the naysayers won’t be able to ignore it. They’ll eventually see the movie and they’ll love it. This is definitely one of those movies that I think lives up to the hype!
The story follows a young girl named Cady, who, after losing her parents in a car accident, ends up living with her aunt Gemma. Gemma is a brilliant toy-company roboticist, who creates a technologically advanced life-like doll A.I. doll that is programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally called M3GAN. She can listen and watch and learn as she becomes a friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to. That child ends up being Cady, and M3GAN will do everything she can to protect her and that includes killing those that wrong her.
That’s just the basic plotline, I won’t go into any other story details. This movie is best seen knowing as little as possible. The movie stars Allison Williams (Get Out, The Perfection) as Gemma, Violet McGraw as Cady, Ronny Chieng (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Brian Jordan Alvarez (Will & Grace), Jen Van Epps (Cowboy Bebop), Lori Dungey (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, extended edition), and Stephane Garneau-Monten (Straight Forward). They’re all great in the film, but Williams and McGraw definitely stand out. But, the true star of the movie is M3GAN.
This movie was a blast to watch and it will offer audiences an incredibly fun time at the movies!
