Review: PROJECT HAIL MARY Is Easily One of the Best Films of the Decade!
Walking out of Project Hail Mary, I had one overwhelming thought in my head. This is exactly why I love going to the movies. It’s the kind of moviegoing experience that grabs you from the start and refuses to let go.
I had ridiculously high hopes for this film and somehow it still exceeded them. I caught it in 70mm on the big screen and it completely blew me away. The story, the characters, the visuals, the emotion, all of it came together to deliver one of the most entertaining theatrical experiences I’ve had in years. I walked out of the theater grinning like a kid because this movie simply made me happy.
Project Hail Mary tells the story of Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, a former science teacher who wakes up alone aboard a spacecraft with no memory of who he is or why he’s there. As his memories slowly return, he realizes he’s humanity’s last hope to stop a cosmic disaster that threatens life on Earth.
The film is based on the bestselling novel by Andy Weir, and the adaptation by Drew Goddard wonderfully captures the spirit of that story in a way that feels massive in scale but still deeply personal. The mystery of Grace’s situation unfolds piece by piece, pulling the audience along for a thrilling and often hilarious ride through space.
One of the things that impressed me most was how well the film balances big sci-fi spectacle with genuine heart. The movie delivers jaw-dropping cosmic visuals and some incredibly creative concepts, but it never forgets that the emotional core of the story is what matters.
Watching Grace figure things out, fail, try again, and keep pushing forward is endlessly engaging. It’s the kind of story where you get completely pulled in and suddenly two and a half hours have flown by.
The film is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and they absolutely crush it here. Their sense of scale and pacing keeps the story moving while still giving the characters room to breathe.
The visual presentation is gorgeous and the production design is phenomenal. Space feels massive, mysterious, and sometimes terrifying. At the same time, the film has this playful energy that keeps the adventure fun. Lord and Miller clearly had a blast bringing this story to life and that enthusiasm pours right off the screen.
Then there’s Gosling, who is honestly perfect for this role. His performance as Ryland Grace carries the entire film and he makes every moment feel authentic. He’s funny, awkward, brilliant, and incredibly likable.
Watching him tackle scientific problems while also dealing with the emotional weight of his mission is awesomely entertaining. Gosling brings a ton of charm to the character and you can tell he is also having a blast playing this character, which makes it even more enjoyable for the audience.
And then there’s Rocky. I’m not going to spoil anything for people who haven’t seen the movie yet, but the relationship that forms between Grace and this alien companion becomes the heart of the entire story. T
heir dynamic is funny, touching, and surprisingly powerful. What starts as a strange encounter slowly grows into one of the most memorable friendships I’ve seen in a sci-fi film in a long time. It’s weird, heartfelt, and absolutley delightful.
Visually the movie is stunning. Seeing this in 70mm was an absolute treat because the imagery really pops on the big screen. The spacecraft interiors, the alien environments, and the cosmic visuals all look incredible.
The creature design and practical VFX work are fantastic as well, giving the film a tactile quality that makes everything feel more real. It’s the kind of spectacle that demands a theater viewing because the scale of it all is part of what makes the experience so special.
By the time the credits rolled, I realized I didn’t want the movie to end. I wanted to keep spending time with these characters and see where their story went next.
Project Hail Mary is funny, emotional, thrilling, and wildly entertaining. It’s easily my favorite movie since Top Gun: Maverick and one of the best sci-fi films I’ve seen in years. It might just be one of the best films of the decade!
If you love space adventures, heartfelt storytelling, and big theatrical experiences, you absolutely need to see this on the big screen. This is the kind of movie that reminds you why we all fell in love with cinema in the first place.
