Rian Johnson "Prays To God" That He'll Get Back to the STAR WARS Franchise One Day

It’s been about five years since Lucasfilm announced that Rian Johnson would be directing a new trilogy of Star Wars films. Since then, Johnson has been keeping himself busy making Knives Out murder mystery movies.

It was reported at the time that the filmmaker would create a new trilogy featuring new characters "from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored." This is a project that Johnson has not given up on and he’s been very confident that one day when Lucasfilm is ready, it will happen.

While recently speaking with Variety at the premiere of his new Knives Out movie, Glass Onion, Johnson called making Star Wars: The Last Jedi the high point of his life and that he prays to get back there someday:

"Making Star Wars was the high point of my life and so I still, I pray to God I'll be back there someday.”

A couple of months ago Johnson said that he still regularly meets with Lucasfilm and talks to President Kathleen Kennedy about his project:

“I’ve stayed close to Kathleen [Kennedy] and we get together often and talk about it. It’s just at this point a matter of schedule and when it can happen. It would break my heart if I were finished, if I couldn’t get back in that sandbox at some point.”

When previously talking about his plan to explore new characters in his films he said: “We’re doing something that steps beyond the legacy characters. What does that look like? To me, the blue sky element of it is what was most striking about it. I know the way that I’m coming at it, and what’s fun about it for everyone in George Lucas’s films, is figuring out, ‘What’s the next step?’ It really makes you think and figure out what the essence of Star Wars is for me and what that will look like moving forward.”

It sounds like one day these Star Wars films will eventually happen, it’s just a matter of time and scheduling. I know a lot of people didn’t care for Johnson’s The Last Jedi, but I’m still curious to see what he’s got planned for this Star Wars project. I think he could do something fun with a fresh story featuring new characters.

Do you think his Star Wars trilogy will ever get made?
