Ridley Scott Is Considering Jumping Back into the ALIEN Franchise for New Prequel Film

It looks like director Ridley Scott isn’t ready to fully let go of the Alien franchise yet. After three decades, the director returned to the franchise to the Prometheus and Alien: Covenant prequel films, which were met with mixed reviews from critics and fans. He planned on making two more prequel films that lead up to the events of the original 1979 film.

After Covenant was released, those movies seemed to fade away, and Scott didn’t think that he would make them, especially with Disney now in charge of the franchise. But, he’s now once again considering jumping back into the franchise and making another prequel film.

During an interview with Los Angeles Times, Scott explains that is still considering possible ways to continue his exploration of the past events of Alien and believes that there is “a lot of mileage” still in the franchise, but that it now needs to “re-evolve.” He went on to say:

“What I always thought when I was making it, the first one, why would a creature like this be made and why was it traveling in what I always thought was a kind of war-craft, which was carrying a cargo of these eggs. What was the purpose of the vehicle and what was the purpose of the eggs? That’s the thing to question — who, why and for what purpose in the next idea, I think.”

That is directly in line with what the filmmaker previously said:

…There’ll be another one and then another one which will gradually drive into the back entrance of the film in 1979… So in other words, why was this space jockey there and why did he have an Alien inside him? And those questions will be answered.”

So he still has the same ideas, it’s just coming up with the right story to put those ideas into. While I’m not a big fan of the prequel films, I am curious to see how the story would lead up to the 1979 Alien film.

About a year ago we learned that there were two Alien TV shows in development. There’s been no update on those, so we don’t know where they stand. In the end, with Disney now holding the right to the Alien franchise, we have no idea if it’s a property that they would want to resurrect. I guess Scott will have to pitch them his ideas and see!
