Robert Downey Jr. Explains the Biggest Difference Between Iron Man and Doctor Doom in AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY
For over a decade, Robert Downey Jr. was the heart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Tony Stark, the genius billionaire who helped shape the Avengers into Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
Now he's stepping back into the MCU wearing a very different suit of armor as Victor Von Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, and according to Downey, the experience couldn't be more different.
Fans have spent the last year wondering how the actor will separate Iron Man from one of Marvel's greatest villains. While both characters are brilliant minds, Downey says that's pretty much where the similarities end.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Downey explained: “There’s the science thing, and then they’re considered, you know, pretty brilliant guys.”
After that, though, the paths of Tony Stark and Victor Von Doom couldn't be further apart. Downey went on to explain how the events that shaped each character sent them in completely opposite directions.
Tony's pain ultimately pushed him toward becoming a hero, while Doom's story creates a threat so dangerous that it takes the combined strength of Marvel's biggest teams to stop him.
“Tony had the trauma that kind of turned him into a hero, and Doom’s got the exact opposite, to where it takes the prowess of all of these folks to go up against him. And it’s a joy to behold.
“It was really weird being on the other side of a bad guy mask, because it’s just such an isolated vibe and I’m seeing them all socializing, and I’m the enemy.”
It's an interesting perspective because Downey isn't just talking about the characters. He's also describing what it felt like on set. After years of being at the center of the Avengers family, he's now playing the one character everyone is united against. That's a pretty wild role reversal.
The interview arrives just after Marvel Studios debuted exclusive Avengers: Doomsday footage during its San Diego Comic-Con presentation. The footage focused heavily on Doctor Doom, with Vanessa Kirby's Sue Storm discussing Victor's past.
The movie is set to bring together the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the original X-Men as they face Doom, making him one of the biggest threats the MCU has ever introduced.
Downey's return also marks a huge full-circle moment. After Tony Stark sacrificed himself in Avengers: Endgame, many fans assumed his Marvel journey was over. Seven years later, he's back, but this time he's the villain standing in the heroes' way.
His return also helped convince Chris Evans to come back for the massive crossover event, adding even more excitement to what's already shaping up to be one of Marvel's biggest movies.
Doctor Doom has long been one of Marvel Comics' greatest villains, most famously serving as the Fantastic Four's arch-enemy. Avengers: Doomsday will finally bring him into the MCU, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has already compared the impact of Doom's arrival to the introduction of Thanos.
If Downey's comments are any indication, fans shouldn't expect a version of Tony Stark with a darker attitude. This sounds like a completely different character, one driven by motivations that place him on the opposite side of everything Stark fought for.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026, and it'll be fascinating to see Robert Downey Jr. trade the role of the MCU's greatest hero for one of its most dangerous villains.
