Robert Downey Jr. Reportedly Pushed for Major AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Reshoots

The Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t done surprising us, and it sounds like Avengers: Doomsday has already been through some heavy behind the scenes action, thanks to Robert Downey Jr.

According to a recent episode of The Hot Mic podcast with Jeff Sneider and John Rocha, the upcoming MCU epic reportedly underwent nearly a full month of reshoots. It was allegedly at the request of Downey himself, who’s stepping into the villainous role of Doctor Doom.

Sneider explained that during filming, Downey was involved in the project but wasn’t physically appearing in some scenes. Instead, stand-ins and doubles filled in while Downey provided voice work or read lines off-set. But at some point, he realized that wasn’t cutting it.

As Sneider put it: "I heard Doomsday had to undergo three weeks of reshoots at Downey’s request. There were times when Downey would be present on set to read lines for Doctor Doom, but not be involved in the scenes.

“In his place, body and face doubles would be standing in the movie. Eventually Downey realized the situation was not working, and requested to reshoot the entire three week’s of scenes, with him in the actual Doctor Doom costume."

It’s important to note Sneider labeled this as a rumor, but still, it wouldn’t be all that shocking. Reshoots are part of Marvel’s normal process, and with a project as stacked as Avengers: Doomsday, course corrections are probably expected. Sneider also alluded to some general “dysfunction” happening on set, though didn’t go into detail.

Regardless of what’s happening behind the scenes, the cast of Avengers: Doomsday is going to be massive. Confirmed returning heroes include Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Invisible Woman, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Letitia Wright as Shuri, and Paul Rudd as Ant-Man.

The roster keeps growing with Wyatt Russell’s U.S. Agent, Tenoch Huerta as Namor, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Lewis Pullman as Sentry, Danny Ramirez as Falcon, Joseph Quinn as Human Torch, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Tom Hiddleston as Loki.

Oh, and let’s not forget the X-Men. Avengers: Doomsday will also feature the return of Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, James Marsden as Cyclops, and Channing Tatum as Gambit.

Avengers: Doomsday is currently slated to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
