Robert Downey Jr. Says Doctor Doom’s Theme Has Shaped Every Day of Filming on AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY

As you know, Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU, but not as Tony Stark. Instead, the actor is stepping into the armor of one of Marvel’s most legendary villains, Avengers: Doomsday antagonist Doctor Doom, and it sounds like the character’s musical identity has already become a major part of his performance.

During a recent conversation, Downey opened up about hearing Doctor Doom’s theme for the first time and explained how composer Alan Silvestri’s music immediately helped him connect with the character.

According to reporter Brandon Davis, who cited comments from CBR interviews with the actor, Downey recalled:

"We're on day 4 of production, Joe Russo's like, 'Come here.' And he plays me Doom’s theme. I was like, 'Oh, yeah. Okay, it’s that. And it even affected that day of shooting and every day since."

Music has always played a huge role in shaping the emotional identity of Marvel’s biggest moments, and Silvestri’s work is responsible for some of the franchise’s most unforgettable themes.

The composer’s collaborations with the Russo Brothers have produced several iconic MCU musical moments over the years. Fans still get chills hearing tracks like “Portals” from Avengers: Endgame, and it sounds like Marvel is once again leaning on Silvestri to help define the next era of the franchise.

What’s especially interesting is that audiences may have already heard a small tease of Doom’s musical motif. A brief piece of music believed to be connected to the villain was heard at the end of The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Whether that cue is the same theme Downey is referring to remains a mystery for now. As anticipation continues to build for Avengers: Doomsday, the Russo Brothers have also been teasing a movie that won’t follow the path many fans expect.

The filmmakers recently discussed their approach to returning to Marvel and suggested that the next chapter is designed to feel like a fresh beginning rather than a continuation of what came before.

Joe Russo said: "That serial shifting and changing and surprising you and then reinventing itself and then shifting and changing and then surprising you... that’s exciting, and I think you’re going to see some shifting and changing [with Doomsday]."

He continued: "So, get ready for it. Look, we were with Rob [Downey Jr.] earlier today. We were both talking about this concept that we are back to phase zero. This is starting over from scratch. We want to make sure everybody feels like this isn’t leaning on anything from the past."

That’s an ambitious promise considering how much history the MCU has accumulated over the last two decades. But if Marvel is truly treating Avengers: Doomsday as a reset point, bringing back Downey in a completely different role certainly feels like a strong statement of intent.

For now, fans can only speculate about what Victor Von Doom’s story will look like, but one thing is clear: whatever Alan Silvestri has created for the character made an immediate impression on Downey.

If the theme can influence an actor’s performance every day on set, there’s a good chance it will leave a lasting impression on audiences as well.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on December 18.
