Robert Downey Jr.’s Marvel Future Might Be Bigger Than We Thought With Doctor Doom and Tony Stark
Marvel may be setting up something much bigger for Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU. What started as a surprising casting twist has started to look like a long-term play, and if the latest report is accurate, Downey’s return to the MCU is a lot bigger than we thought.
According to insider My Time to Shine Hello, “Robert Downey Jr. will keep playing Doctor Doom after Secret Wars and not only that but he will also return as Tony Stark.” That’s a pretty big claim, and while it isn’t confirmed, it is something that fans have been speculating.
The multiverse has cracked the door wide open for returns that once felt impossible. Characters aren’t limited to one timeline anymore, and Marvel Studios has made it clear they’re willing to play in that sandbox.
Bringing Downey back as both Victor Von Doom and Tony Stark would be a perfect example of how far they’re willing to push that concept.
We already know Downey is set to appear as Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, which is easily one of the most unexpected moves Marvel has made in years. After defining the MCU as Iron Man for over a decade, seeing him take on one of Marvel’s most dangerous villains is going to be a trip.
What makes this rumor even more interesting is how it lines up with what Kevin Feige has already shared about Downey’s return. Feige revealed that this idea didn’t just come out of nowhere. It’s been quietly brewing for a while.
“We never lost touch with Downey,” Feige stated. “He is ingrained in the fabric of the MCU for obvious reasons, and we would talk about when and how and if there could be a return.”
Marvel has been thinking about bringing him back long before this Doom casting became public. But Feige didn’t stop there. He leaned right into the creative freedom the MCU now has.
“It’s our universe. It’s a multiverse. We can do whatever the heck we want. He played the most iconic hero. Let’s have him play the most iconic villain.”
There’s a real chance Marvel sees him as a long-term piece of the puzzle again. If this rumor turns out to be true, fans could be looking at a future where Downey balances both sides of the Marvel spectrum, embodying Tony Stark in one corner of the multiverse and Doctor Doom in another.
It will be interesting to see if there is any truth to this rumor, but it’s getting harder to ignore the possibility. And if Marvel actually pulls this off, it could end up being one of the coolest and most unexpected evolutions the franchise has pulled off.
