Robert Eggers Says His WERWULF Horror Film Is the Darkest Thing He’s Ever Written

Nosferatu director Robert Eggers is currently developing a werewolf movie titled Werwulf, and it’s a film project that I’m very curious and excited about.

The story is said to be set in 13th century England, and it will also feature dialogue that is true to the time period and has translations and annotations for those uninitiated in Old English.

Eggers recently offered some new insight into the film saying that it’s the darkest horror movie he’s ever made.

Eggers teased: “It’s a medieval werewolf movie. And it’s also the darkest thing I’ve ever written. By far.”

So, that exciting to hear as everything Eggers has has been pretty dark. He co-wrote the screenplay for Werwulf alongside Sjón, the Icelandic poet and novelist who previously co-wrote the viking movie The Northman with Eggers.

Jarin Blaschke, Eggers’ go-to cinematographer, previously shared that the movie is going to deliver something that’s not been done before.

He said: “Yeah, we’re doing it now. I can’t tell you a thing. But it’s something that’s not been done before that I’m aware of or not done in this way. So [we’re] just going to test it and see if it works. We’re still figuring it out, and I can’t talk about it, [but] the primary candidate has not been done before.”

Chris Columbus, who produced Nosferatu, is on board to produce Werwulf. Focus Features will release Werwulf on Christmas Day 2026.
