Robert Pattinson Praises “Incredibly Generous” Steven Soderbergh for Stepping In to Finish THE BATMAN 2
Production on The Batman: Part II is moving forward again, and Robert Pattinson has nothing but praise for Steven Soderbergh, who stepped in to help finish the DC sequel after director Matt Reeves was forced to step away due to an ongoing family matter.
It's an unusual situation for a major superhero movie, but Soderbergh apparently offered to help Reeves get the film across the finish line, and Pattinson couldn't be happier with how it's being handled.
Speaking with GamesRadar, Pattinson shared his appreciation for the filmmaker and his willingness to lend a hand: "I am so happy he's come on to help Matt. It's incredibly generous of him – and he's doing it in the loveliest way. It's completely selfless."
Pattinson also explained that Reeves had already invested an enormous amount of work into the sequel, making Soderbergh's decision to help all the more meaningful.
"I think Matt had put so much work into the script, and we're almost done. So for someone to come in and say, 'I just want to help Matt do it; I want to do it in conjunction with him and just get it to the edit.' And to have someone who's as talented as Steven doing it is great."
Soderbergh, whose credits include Ocean's Eleven, reportedly approached Reeves himself about helping complete production. With roughly two-thirds of the movie already filmed, there's still a substantial amount of work to finish.
Reeves has also made it clear that he remains very much involved with the project, despite having to temporarily leave the production.
"Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II," Reeves wrote on social media. "I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography. Thank you to all for your concern and well wishes."
As for the production itself, Pattinson confirmed that filming has resumed, saying, "I think they're in production already. And I'm starting in a couple of days."
While the circumstances are unfortunate, having a director of Soderbergh's caliber step in to help Reeves finish his movie is pretty awesome. More importantly, it sounds like he's approaching the job with the intention of preserving Reeves' vision rather than putting his own stamp on the sequel.
Meanwhile, recent footage from the set has offered some interesting clues about what Bruce Wayne will be dealing with when he returns to Gotham City.
One sequence shows Bruce leaving a Gotham courthouse surrounded by angry protestors carrying signs with messages including “Court of Fowls, I'm coming for you next, Your Greed is Killing Us, Oligarchs gotta go, The richer get richer, Eat the rich, One day the poor will have nothing," and "Re$i$t.”
That's a pretty hostile reception for Gotham's most famous billionaire. The Wayne family has historically enjoyed a relatively positive reputation among the city's working-class residents, so something has clearly changed.
Could the Court of Owls be manipulating public opinion against Bruce? Is Anarky involved in stirring up the city's growing resentment toward its wealthy elite? Both are interesting possibilities, especially given the political tension suggested by these scenes.
It's difficult to know what to make of any of that without more context, but there are certainly some interesting possibilities for Gotham's next chapter.
Pattinson will return alongside Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb, Jayme Lawson as Bella Réal, and Gil Perez-Abraham as Officer Martinez.
The new additions include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Sebastian Koch, and Brian Tyree Henry, though Reeves hasn't officially revealed which characters they'll be playing.
The Batman: Part II is scheduled to hit theaters on February 18, 2028.
There's still a long road ahead before we see Pattinson's Batman back on the big screen, but it's good to hear that production is moving forward and that Reeves has someone as talented as Soderbergh helping him finish the film.
Hopefully, Reeves can focus on his family knowing his Gotham City story is in capable hands.
