Robert Pattinson Says THE BATMAN: PART II Takes a "Real Left Turn" and Is ‘"So Ambitious"
Whatever Matt Reeves has planned for Gotham City next, Robert Pattinson is making it sound like we shouldn’t expect a repeat of his first Batman movie.
Pattinson has offered a tantalizing tease for The Batman: Part II, describing the long-awaited DC sequel as an ambitious new take that heads somewhere very different from 2022’s The Batman. Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but his comments make the mystery surrounding the movie a lot more interesting.
Speaking with Collider, Pattinson talked about how Reeves’ sequel compares to the first film: “It’s so ambitious. I mean, I sort of said the other day on something that the first one was a different take on a Batman movie, and this one is another.
“It’s a real left turn from the first one, but somehow it keeps elements of the kind of feel of it. But it just feels really ambitious, and I’m excited to see how it turns out.”
A “real left turn” is exactly the kind of description I want to hear about The Batman: Part II. The first movie established such a specific version of Gotham, Bruce Wayne, and Batman that simply trying to recreate it wouldn’t be nearly as interesting as taking that world somewhere unexpected.
The encouraging part is Pattinson saying the sequel still retains elements of the original film’s feel. Reeves can push Batman into new territory without abandoning the atmosphere and identity that made The Batman work.
Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne/Batman, with Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan joining him in the cast. Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry, and Sebastian Koch are also set to appear, though we still don’t know who several of these actors are playing or what kind of story Reeves has cooked up.
Reeves completed the script for The Batman: Part II in June 2025. The sequel was initially announced in 2022, only a month after The Batman arrived in theaters, but getting the next chapter onto the big screen has turned into a lengthy process.
The Batman: Part II is currently scheduled to hit theaters on February 18, 2028, meaning six years will have passed since Pattinson first suited up as the Dark Knight.
DC Studios co-chief James Gunn previously addressed the extended wait, pointing out that long gaps between major sequels aren’t particularly unusual in Hollywood.
“To be fair, a 5-year gap or more is fairly common in sequels,” Gunn wrote on Threads. “7 years between Alien and Aliens. 14 years between Incredibles. 7 years between the first two Terminators. 13 years between Avatars. 36 years between Top Guns. And, of course, six years between Guardians Vol 2 and Vol 3.”
It’s certainly been a long road to The Batman: Part II, and new Reeves is taking the character and this version of Gotham in another direction while holding onto what connected the two films.
Now the big question is what kind of left turn we’re talking about. Considering how many decades Batman has spent on the big screen, finding a genuinely different approach isn’t easy.
If Reeves has found one, I’m very curious to see what he and Pattinson are bringing to Gotham when The Batman: Part II finally arrives.
